My earliest European ancestor got there in 1607. He was recorded as being in James Cittie (City) in 1619. Records got sketchy for several years (the aforementioned Powhatan War, most likely). Turned up further inland up the James River.

My direct ancestors came some time early to mid 1600s, and never left Virginia until they came to DC about 1918.
I’ve always felt that Maryland, Virginia, and DC (my birthplace) are all my ‘home states’ ;-)
