Assad is still in power.

Do you have any proof that he ever intended or tried to finish off ISIS? Putin only ever went into Syria to save Assad. He never cared about ISIS or saving Christians. That was a myth propagated by the ignorant.

Their final version of what they want Syria to look like (post-Assad) are different.

That is a possible explanation. Perhaps they will use some of the $100 billion gift that Obama just gave them, to hire 20-30 thousand more Shi’ite Afghan (Hazara) mercenaries, and let them go door to door with the Saudi mercenaries for the next year or two.
Leave it to the next US president clean up Obama’s mess if they want.
That was my instant analysis as well. But I really don't know how much the Russians actually accomplished so I'm hoping some Freeper will pop in with some real data. It could be that the Russians just ran out of money and are withdrawing with their tail between their legs.
