They looked at poll data, and gun ownership has fluctuated, up and down.
Pew Research says there's no definitive data on the subject,

Gun ownership is down. Don’t believe those record setting background checks that have been going on since 2009.
That may depend on whether you’re counting guns or gun owners. The number of guns in circulation has sky rocketed, but so has the number of gun owners applying for concealed carry permits. I guess the real question might be how many first time gun owners are there? Can that even be tracked? And why am I responding to a Clinton comment as though it was from a credible source?? LOL
