To be clear: Cruz said the the Chicago protesters were to blame for the violent protest. He said that Trump had created an environment that resulted in his supporters attacking protesters during his speeches. Cruz did not say Trump was to blame for the violent protests by the leftist thugs.
Some Trump supporters claim that Cruz’ use of the word but negates the statement blaming the leftist thugs for the violent Chicago protests, but I have linked some of them to the definition of but, which makes it clear that the use of the word but MODIFIES the previous statement, but does not negate it.
Also, in case any Trump supporters still believe that the word but negates the previous statements, then I linked one to the transcript of a Trump speech in which his use of the word but would negate all of his statements about what he would do about immigration, IF the use of but negates the previous statements.

Trumps meaning can be often misinterpreted. He has always said he will only attack if he is attacked. He has a quick response to attack back similar to the Clinton war room.
The difference, Trump hits back on his own. He does not send hacks out to do his dirty work. Also, when he sees a protestor trying to selfishly distract the media during his speech he says something to hit back. He does not start the confrontations he reacts in a spontaneous way. If someone was yelling like an undisciplined child during your speech, how would you respond?
