Utahs staunchly conservative legislature came close to eliminating the death penalty and gave serious consideration to setting up a system to grow and distribute medical marijuana making the 2016 session a surprising one that may foreshadow future traction for progressive issues. [ ]
The lean toward progressive issues was led by a pair of outgoing GOP lawmakers who went all in on their bills. Sen. Mark Madsen led the medical marijuana push, while Sen. Steve Urquhart pushed the death penalty abolishment.
Urquhart also backed a failed measure that would have added discrimination protections for gay and transgender people. A year ago, a successful bill he co-sponsored and was backed by the Mormon church guaranteed protection for LGBT people from housing and employment discrimination, while also protecting the rights of religious groups and individuals.

Free drugs! Let murderers and rapists live!
Real progressive...
ANYTHING to protect the ‘dear Mormon church’!!!
Progressive leanings.
Translation: Wimpoid marshmallow no knowledge of history leanings.
Progressives are the enemy and will sooner or later be dealt with.
Uh, voters get the government they deserve (elect)?
“ANYTHING to protect the dear Mormon church!!!”
Here’s the thing HL 27, ALL RELIGIONS are basically Socialist! Mormonism isn’t any different that Catholicism or Judiaism, or you name it. In Utah though, you have a serious concentration of Mormons, so it’s easy to see. Take a look at any country with a single religious majority and I will show you a Sociaist Country.
Medical pot there’s a lot of money behind it.
..Conservative Utah lawmakers show progressive leanings...
So, what else is new with the GOPe? They are oblivious.
Progressive — the left’s weasel word for Liberal/Socialist/Communist. Did not get past the by-line.
Yeah right.....buy the AP's baiting premise that these are conservative law makers....and then you can believe the story. More MSM BS.
Saudi Arabia and other majority Muslim countries?? Are they really socialist?? I don’t know much about their governments or social organization in those countries; just wondering if they are socialist.
I was born and raised in Utah, born, bred Catholic, went to Catholic School, moved out for a long time, just came back 4 years ago...now I know why I moved out...’the Mormons’ and I’m not kidding...
I won’t go into my feelings on here because everyone has a right to their religion, but when that religion becomes a nation of life, it’s time to stop it!!!
You look at Glenn Beck, you look at Harry Reid, you look at Orin Hatch, you look at Mitt Romney...there you go!!!
Allowing sick people more medical options is a "progressive issue"?
(Dem Socialists of America)
(Communist Party of America) - - - -
How did we become so impotent for our nation and our brilliant Constitution? For starters....a very Socialistic/Marxist and Islamic party, Obama's Washington is now fighting for their for their very existence now that Donald J. Trump has become the people's choice for POTUS.....how did we get this far into Socialism/Communism?....POLITICAL CORRECTNESS, the weapon of our enemies...euphemistically called liberalism, in fact is socialism, Islam, Marxism...all use PC to put America and American's down...now we're all in the fight of our lives for a Republic of sorts, not this weakened Socialist America, Obama's America.
Vote for Trump!
I believe I’m pretty conservative and many might even label me “reactionary”. Maintaining the death penalty in the face of escalating costs to do so is not a conservative position, by definition. Conservatism also applies to resources and wasting resources to fight a losing battle isn’t conservative or smart. Choose to win the war which is to keep society safe from those who endanger us.
JMO and medical marijuana is only the camel’s nose, IMO. If I wanted to live in CO, I’d move there.
I guess I should have “excepted” the Muslim “world.” First of all, Islam isn't a religion in the same sense as those in the rest of the world are, and Secondly, these hell holes are totalitarian.
Sounds more libertarian than progressive.
Contradiction in terms - the natural rights of all individuals and groups, religious or not, include the right to discriminate on any basis whatsoever.
Who is causing the “escalating costs”?
Most Islamic countries in the Middle East are Islamic socialist. But religious Christian countries (ones that are actually religious versus quasi-secular) are not.
