Poll: Trump would take much of his GOP base with him as third-party candidate

A new poll by Rasmussen Reports conducted on March 6 and 7 shows that if Donald Trump is denied the GOP nomination for presidential candidate, he could run as a third-party candidate with much of his base intact.

Among Republican voters, 36% say they are "likely" to vote for Trump if he runs as a third-party presidential candidate – and 24% of all GOP voters are "very likely" to give Trump their vote if he chooses a third-party route.

The survey results add further support to the view that the anti-Trump scorched earth policy underway by the GOP establishment and its allies in the conservative media will backfire on two fronts: (1) it will guarantee a Hillary Clinton victory in the general election, and (2) a substantial portion of the GOP base will be lost indefinitely for future elections after frustrated voters realize that their participation in the primary process was so vehemently fought against by an entrenched Republican bureaucracy and suite of media pundits so insensitive to the base's concerns over the country's direction.

RE: It needs to be a Trump/Cruz ticket. Otherwise a lot of Cruz people stay home.

This Cruz supporter won’t stay home even if it were not a Trump/Cruz ticket.

I personally think a VP for Cruz is a waste of several years. I’d rather see him in the Supreme Court.

I’m for Ted Cruz...if Trump wins the nomination I will gladly support him. We have people on this thread threatening to vote for Hillary if Trump doesn’t get the nomination.

Close enough, Oklahoma.

When I first registered to vote it was as an independent. Because I didn't register as a democrat, my dad lost his job working for the city.

I stayed independent all the time I was in the military and registered as a Republican because of Ronald Reagan although I was a real Republican long before that.

I’m from Texas....I was vehemently against the Democrat party when Nixon was in office. They bullied their way through everything then just like now. I lived to see the south and particularly Texas go from “the solid south “ for democrats to mostly conservative

Yep, am from Texas and was taught at an early age to vote Democrat since the Yankees who beat the Confederates were the GOP. Carter changed all that, so in a sense we need to thank him for his blatant incompetence and liberalism in making the GOP brand dominant in the South.

If the GOP screws Trump on the nomination I hope they finish in third place this year.

Interesting. Ponder the implications of a 4 party election. Who says it only has to be 2? In NY we have multiparty ballots and there are coalition building overtures made each and every year for everthing from County Sheriff to Village Mayors. Passing petitions for candidates is a great way to get as close to the ground game as possible. Interesting.

If I thought Trump could win a four way plurality and/or force concessions from an otherwise corrupt and inept Republican Party, I would seriously consider entertaining a Trump inspired American Party.

Trump would be a spoiler without the Cruz base.

A Trump-Cruz third party would actually have a chance to win, especially is the Dems stick with Clinton, and the GOPe puts Romney on the ticket.

I’m not sure if I can go that far, but I could certainly sit out again. Wouldn’t vote Mittens in 2012 either.

There is a quasi-conservative flavor of the Free Sh!t electorate, which thinks that we can have lower taxes, increased Soc Sec and Medicare, cheaper and higher quality healthcare, a much stronger defense, a balanced budget, and that Somebody Else (who is emphatically Not Them) is going to pay for it all.

Trump will get 99+ percent of that vote.

I’ve been a Repub for 55 years, but if they make Trump pull out and go independent, I will go too.
