Trump infomercial captivates networks
POLITICO ^ | March 9, 2016 | HADAS GOLD

Millions of viewers tuned into to cable news networks during the prime 9 p.m. EST hour likely expecting to hear some candidate speeches. What they got, on CNN, Fox, and MSNBC, was one candidate talking for 45 minutes: Donald Trump.

All three networks stuck with Trump's long press conference even as it veered into sales pitches for his own product lines, despite the fact that Hillary Clinton, who had won the Mississippi primary in a landslide and was neck-and-neck in Michigan, spoke at the same time. They also mostly ignored Bernie Sanders' speech, which occurred in the 8 p.m. hour and John Kasich's speech, which happened during Trump's event.

Only MSNBC ran Clinton’s speech in its entirety after Trump finished. And neither Sanders, Kasich, nor any of the other candidates got anything more than snippets of air time.

That sparked an instant flutter of complaints on Twitter, and revived an uncomfortable issue: Did the networks, knowing that the often-unpredictable and blustery Trump draws a bigger audience, go with the better draw rather than cover the full political landscape?

I cannot take five minutes of her either and less of the current resident of the white hut. In fact, whenever alerted to his being on, I turn off the device.

Holding a press conference rather than a victory rally is pure genius that only Trump could come up with.

It was a very good Presser. Haven’t see anyone who can manage the press so well as Trump in a long time. Too bad he cannot just hold Pressers but has to go to Debates.

Even Megyn Kelly admitted it was a breath of fresh air and a departure from the millions of canned speeches you normally get from a career politician.

It was hilarious to hear the CNN panel fuming about the “infomercial” when it was their bosses in the same building who made the decision to carry it in its entirety.

Very few of them are pointing out that the products were there to refute Romney’s, Cruz and little Marco’s suggestions that Trump was a failed businessman (haha) because of these very same products that they claimed didn’t exist.

What struck many critics like Elleithee was that Trump wasn’t even making much news. He was mostly just riffing. He took questions from reporters but also veered into long digressions touting his wines, steaks, golf courses, and even his water.

It was a typically colorful and unpredictable Trump event. But as Business Insider columnist Josh Barro noted on Twitter, Trump’s penchant for making amusing or contentious statements has given him a higher news (read: ratings) value.

“Trump is taking questions. Clinton will give the same speech she always does. Trump event has higher news value,” he wrote.

Trump worked out a synergistic relationship with the networks. He gives them a news conference worth watching. They give him free airtime. It’s win-win.

It was mentioned on Fox that that much air time would cost a fortune. Of course they all did it for ratings!

LOL

Trump caps night of wins with victory in Hawaii caucuses

HONOLULU -— Donald Trump has won the Hawaii Republican presidential caucuses, claiming the last prize in a night of victories for the Republican front-runner.

Wind, rain and long lines didn’t keep the state’s passionate voters from the polls to decide how the Republican presidential candidates would split the state’s 19 delegate votes.

“Our votes here might be a small vote, but nevertheless, we’re here to do our duty,” said Al Carvalho, 49, who co-owns a contracting business with his wife. “I’m voting for Donald Trump because I’m tired of the career politicians, and I’m willing to give somebody else a chance.”

Trump took to Twitter to note his night-capper:

You can’t even hear the questions. Why doesn’t Trump provide microphones for the press? Or possibly repeat the question?

The anti-Trump media laughs at Trump while he makes fools of them all. He had all 3 cable network cover him for a full hour in prime time - for free!

Again, manipulating the media that hates him to disprove their claim that he will not be able to deliver on his promises.

From what I read this morning, the steaks company is in fact out of business and he just put some steaks from some other supplier that they sell at one of his resorts up there next to him. You can no longer buy Trump Steaks; go to the internet and try. What he did last night is like the owner of a restaurant saying he owns a steak company.

It appears to be a similar case with the magazine, water, and wine as well. All attempts at mass market that failed but since he sells a similar, but different, product somewhere in his hotels or casinos he put them up there.

No hear me out: I don’t begrudge a rather prolific business empire of having a few brands that didn’t work out. They can’t all be winners. I have no honest idea about the health of Trumps overall business, but I am fairly certain the guy could buy everything I own with his pocket change, so I won’t be criticizing his business acumen any time soon.

His display last night though... Isn’t it severely disingenuous? It was like Soviets parading fake missiles. Why isn’t anyone on this site hitting him for the bizarre deception? Is he so insecure about Romney, that after voters clearly dismissed the failed establishment candidate’s opinion, Trump still needs to lie about a few minor points?

I am not a Trump supporter, so maybe I am being biased... But that was strange.

What is funny (to me - YMMV) is that the steaks were actually “Bush Brothers (Provisional Company)” since the Trump steak line no longer exists, evidently. Since Jeb! had to drop out & another Bush brother Neil has joined the Cruz campaign, there was a message of some sort there. Anti-Trumpers were criticizing the steaks as being ‘fatty’ as opposed to ‘marbled’, but they were Bush steaks, not Trump. I’ll pass on the steaks for some local grass-fed beef, but he could send me a case of wine for sure. :-)
