Documents Reveal What Trump Actually Said About His University

Julianna Goldman, Laura Strickler CBS News March 7, 2016 Documents Reveal What Trump Actually Said About His University Republican groups fighting Donald Trump are trying everything to derail the front-runner, including airing ads targeting Trump University. The program sold nearly 7,000 students on learning the billionaire's real estate secrets, but the school began winding down in 2010. More than 150 former students allege it was a fraud. Three lawsuits have been filed, one $40 million case in New York brought by the state's attorney general and two class action suits in California. Trump University began in 2004 with online courses and in 2007 it started offering live events across the country as seminars in hotel ballrooms. There was a three-day, $1,500 course where students were urged to sign up for a $35,000 mentorship program. In a tweet yesterday defending the school, Trump pointed to a 98 percent satisfaction rate, but court documents show that nearly 40 percent of the students who signed up for the three-day seminar or more received a refund. Trump's critics say the next week is critical to stopping the Republican front-runner, and they're betting Trump University is their best weapon. "I could have settled it, I think, pretty easy, I don't like settling cases," Trump said on "Face the Nation." But by refusing to settle, Trump has opened the door to attacks at the peak of his presidential bid and distractions on the campaign trail -- like the 10 hours in December and January he spent in closed-door depositions for the two class-action lawsuits. Court documents reveal that attorneys for the other side zeroing in on Trump's claim, as seen in a promotional video, that he chose all the instructors.

What I don't get is why Trump bothered to call this scam a "university." Obviously the "faculty" was of questionable caliber (per Trump's own admission), but other things are amiss as well. It had no physical campus, it awarded no degrees (indeed, it offered no degree plans at all); it had no accreditation, it had no research programs or facilities and no graduate or post-graduate programs. The closest thing to a curriculum it had was a list of sales pitches for even more progressive higher-priced seminars where they would supposedly get around to teaching the real techniques of making money in real estate.

In other words, out of all the things that comprise the average university, Trump "University" had none of them, other than the hefty tuition.

With all of the usual characteristics of the modern university being blatantly missing from Trump "University", one is left to wonder how he got away with calling it one, when it pretty clearly wasn't anything of the sort.

Which is exactly why my original question is so important. If the number of people who took the course is immense, then 5,000 wanting out is no big deal. But if the 10,000 pieces of paper they point to as evidence that the course was great (98% approval), then 5,000 is a huge deal.

So, how many people took the course?

All I am saying is that it does not seam to be any kind of overwhelming evidence of fraud if only 150 have joined the lawsuit.

You have to believe that those lawyers are out there trying to convince as many as possible to join in.

You are right. I’m in my 22nd year. I get calls every few weeks from BBB to “join”. Some FReepers try to insinuate it reflects poorly on Trump because the business wasn’t “accredited”. That’s a crock. You pay for that.

TRUMP UNIVERSITY HAS A 98% APPROVAL RATING. SO WHY IS NEW YORK ATTORNEY GENERAL ERIC SCHNEIDERMAN WASTING MILLIONS IN TAXPAYER MONEY GOING AFTER THEM?

Most churches have higher negatives than that!

PL2... agree with you. As Trump said, he fights this type of suit because a settlement makes him seem to be an easy target for the pilot fish.

Just the kind of backbone we haven’t seen for a long time. America needs a hard fighter.

Video of him saying “I’m changing it and I’m softening the position because we have to have talented people in this country.”

The web site says one thing, he says his position is different from the web site.

well, to get started, Let’s agree that Trump is not a politician, who’s had to rehearse and memorize and pontificate before congress for years over visas. And I know Jack Rabbit about visas. I’m sure that Trump has always had people who have people who worry about those things for him, too. When an ordinary citizen runs for President, it’s a learning process - for him and for us.

And so, I tend to agree with Virginia Carter who summarizes:

“It could be that Trump is not changing his mind by the day, but carefully threading the needle on the skilled visa issue in a specific way - supporting visas that go to brilliant foreign students and exceptionally talented foreigners but drawing the line at H-1B visas.”

http://gosporttimes.com/2016/03/07/donald-trumps-flip-flop-over-h1b-visa-lands-him-in/

Personally, I’d rather have a President, who, given more information, is willing to look at the subject from all angles - which opens the topic up to public discussion and mutual understanding. It reflects intelligence. I’d rather not have a President who is immovable because it might make him look bad to deviate outside a very narrow box his ‘official position’ has locked him in.

Cruz, for instance, will look like he’s flip-flopping if he backs off ‘no return ever’ deportation (and he will have to soften that position to get elected) (and not to mention the perceived flip-flop if he ‘doesn’t’ turn Iran into glass). And Rubio has certainly flip-flopped, having first not even mentioned a wall, he jumped on board with Cruz and Trump to be the popular kid, and then said his platform really was to argue and hem and haw for 10 years, or so. Rubio’s real platform, according to Trump’s site, is to increase H1B visa three-fold.
