There's a point at which any decent person puts aside partisan rhetoric.
That point would be death. Especially the death of a First Lady.
Even if you didn't like Reagan, taking shots at Nancy Reagan in 2016, after her death, is really despicable.
Post writer Lois Romano decided to write a ridiculously nasty smear of Ronald Reagan and his wife as the obit. About half the content seems to be about how much money Nancy Reagan spent on things. By paragraph 3, Lois Romano starts attacking Nancy Reagan.
"As first lady from 1981 to 1989, Mrs. Reagan had a knack for inviting controversy from her spending habits to her request that the White House abide by an astrologer when planning the presidents schedule."
That's less than 100 words in and Lois Romano is already doing the fully Kitty Kelley workup. Then she pivots to smears of Ronald Reagan and attacks on contemporary Republicans. Because that is how the left operates now.
"Always working behind the scenes, she was involved in the hiring, and firing, of senior staff at pivotal junctures. She insisted, over the objections of some senior advisers, that her husband publicly apologize for the governments secret arms sales to Iran, a scandal that rocked his presidency. It proved to be the right call. She also bucked the administrations right-leaning ideologues in pushing for improved relations with the Soviet Union, conspiring with the secretary of state to do it.
"His illness prompted Mrs. Reagan to openly challenge the George W. Bush administration and other conservatives who sought to limit embryonic stem cell research, which scientists believe could hold the cure for Alzheimers..."
This pivots to praise for Obama. Because again, propaganda trumps any concept of basic decency.
Then Lois Romano pivots back to attacking Nancy Reagan.
"Mrs. Reagans most-prominent initiative as first lady was the Just Say No drug-awareness campaign, aimed at preventing and reducing recreational drug use among young people. But time after time, her efforts at developing a substantive role for herself were overshadowed by parallel revelations about her pricey clothes and rich friends and about accusations that she meddled in her husbands official business."
Remember this is an obituary for a First Lady who just died. Not an editorial. Not a biography. And this is what the left thinks is appropriate. It's what the Washington Post thinks is appropriate. Which means it's what Jeff Bezos of Amazon must think is appropriate. So Lois Romano continues to attack Nancy Reagan as a bad feminist. More whining about her clothes.
"she swept into town with a larger-than-life cadre of wealthy California friends and celebrities who wore sable coats, knotted traffic with their shiny white limousines and threw lavish parties the likes of which were unprecedented at inaugural festivities"
As opposed to the modest and humble Obamas. And Michelle Obama who is known to avoid lavish dresses and celebrity appearances. But that's okay. She's on the left.
What about ALL the Lavish vacations SHE and her friends took all OVER the WORLD on our DIME !!
Nancy Reagan was criticized by the likes of Lois Romano for buying new White House china - ever been to the WH basement where the various china sets from the presidencies are on display?? Its the people’s museum. Anyway, she wanted to spruce up the White House after the tackiness of the Carters so she bought new china SOLELY WITH DONATIONS FROM CONTRIBUTORS. Jackie Kennedy did the same thing and she never caught a word of criticism only lavish praise from the trashy people at the Washington Post and other like-minded media.
“As opposed to the modest and humble Obamas. And Michelle Obama who is known to avoid lavish dresses and celebrity appearances. But that’s okay. She’s on the left.”
Jackie Kennedy’s spending on new china, designer dresses, entertaining, and redecorating the White House was also completely acceptable and merely demonstrated she had impeccable taste and style.
Some people think that she is really "Michael" Obama.
If that is real, Michelle Obama wasn’t First Lady when it was generated. And quite frankly, I’ve spent that much for dinner for my wife and I and I don’t think it’s out of line.
By contrast, the media absolutely gushed over President Kennedy's lavish, celebrity-studded inaugural party and First Lady Jackie Kennedy's ritzy tastes.
Why are you surprised???
This is the same Washington Post that worships Michelle Obama.
Who reads the Post?
I knew they wouldn’t be able to wait to get their fangs out and start trashing her.
Prediction: 0bammy is too busy to go to the funeral.
The Establushment/Globalist/Uni-Party
I was thinking the same thing. I've paid more than that for champagne many years ago at a liquor store. Also, consider that the price for a bottle of champagne is often higher at a restaurant or hotel than at a liquor store for the exact same champagne. So, what was the Waldorf-Astoria carrying that had an inflated price of $44?
She did. And the other thing that she generally did was to keep her opinions to herself and let Reagan be the President. She was considerably less socially conservative than he was (she seems to have been pro-abortion, for example), but she knew that people had elected him and not her.
She was generally very dignified and courteous, and was not a discordant presence the way you-know-who is. Of course, nobody’s dignified and courteous anymore, so I guess her style wouldn’t be appreciated now.
Isn’t that the China that the Clinton’s stole?
I disagree that she kept all of her opinions to herself. Even the biggest Reagan fans from his White House staff agreed that Nancy was a strong force. Reagan's first chief of staff Don Regan clashed with Nancy and was not kind to her in his 1988 memoir.
Nancy wielded her influence much differently than Hillary or Rosalyn Carter. Definitely more gracefully.
that's a fake receipt.
Yeah, I was thinking about ol’ Dan.
