The city that pioneered broken windows policing is retooling its longtime strategy of trying to reduce serious crime by cracking down on people who commit minor offenses, like public drinking and littering. [ ]
Change cant come fast enough for people like Manhattan resident Jamal Williams. The 28-year-old was cited by the police two years ago for spitting on the ground outside his East Harlem public housing building. The offense was as minor as they come, but when he forgot to show up for his court date, he became a wanted man. [ ]
But critics say the softer touch will threaten public safety.
The message that theyre sending is its OK to litter, its OK to urinate in public and all thatll happen is youll have to pay a ticket. Its lunacy, said Ed Mullins, president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association. Whats shocking is Commissioner Bratton flip flopping. He spent his past two decades on preaching about broken windows
It doesnt make sense.

something happens to my wife in the city because of this @#### mayor, i’m going to be agitated
Ah, those New York values
Its back to 1974 again in NYC.
Perhaps it’s not so much the tactics but the crime itself that clogs courts and jails. Hmmm?
My own view is that the big cities are going to be bad for a while. Everything’s decentralizing anyway because of computers. Why live and work like sardines?
I have more than a little difficulty accepting that assertion at face value. Nice to see Mary Mapes found work.
Release them.
Let them clog the streets, alleys, subway system and your neighborhood.
Yes, a bit hard to believe. There’s rather a difference between spitting on the ground and deliberately breaking someone’s window, or keying their car.
Maybe when the officer commented on it, he answered rudely instead of apologizing—which is never a good idea.
“In declining states the leadership intuitively chooses the most harmful course of action.”- F. Nietzsche. Lets see; city “leaders” advocating urinating in public.
Maybe Jamal was just talking smack.
Just do away with all laws and the prisons won’t have to deal with prisoners at all.
They could be kept nice and clean and operating costs will drop significantly.
Actually NYC police have been handing out spitting tickets. If you don’t pay you get a warrant and the costs quickly add up...
My coworker was watching his daughter play with her classmates from the vacant playground with other mothers. They gave all the parents (even with proof their kid was over the fence) tickets for being in the playground without a kid. Similar to spitting they just want $$$. But if you don’t pay then it becomes a warrant and future nightmare....
Crime has been declining for 20 years.
Democrats are determined to make sure that crime rises again.
Warriors! Come out and Play!
