Mitt Romney has instructed his closest advisers to explore the possibility of stopping Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention, a source close to Romney's inner circle says.
The 2012 GOP nominee's advisers are examining what a fight at the convention might look like and what rules might need revising.
"It sounds like the plan is to lock the convention," said the source.
Romney is focused on suppressing Trump's delegate count to prevent him from accumulating the 1,237 delegates he needs to secure the nomination.
But implicit in Romney's request to his team to explore the possibility of a convention fight is his willingness to step in and carry the party's banner into the fall general election as the Republican nominee. Another name these sources mentioned was House Speaker Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate in 2012.

If Romney is the nominee, Hillary becomes queen, and the country implodes.

It struck me exactly that way. Consider it done, GOP.
They aren’t suicidal, they have different priorities. If Trump wins he becomes head of the party and cleans out the stables. They lose their power. If Hillary or some other Democrat wins they keep control of the Republican Party cash machine, and they can use the threat of Hillary and a Democrat run congress to blackmail conservatives into voting for them. Of course they would love to have one of their own who is dependent on the donor class win, but a Democrat is preferable to Trump.

What would be happening is Romney would be running for re-election, his Supreme Court nominee would be up for consideration right now and we would all (most of us) be supporting him against his campaign against Hitlery.

Ironic when we think back to early in this political season when the RNC all but required Trump to sign a pledge to remain loyal to the Republican Party. Now that he is winning the Republican Party is not so loyal to him.
