Mitt Romney has instructed his closest advisers to explore the possibility of stopping Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention, a source close to Romney's inner circle says.
The 2012 GOP nominee's advisers are examining what a fight at the convention might look like and what rules might need revising.
"It sounds like the plan is to lock the convention," said the source.
Romney is focused on suppressing Trump's delegate count to prevent him from accumulating the 1,237 delegates he needs to secure the nomination.
But implicit in Romney's request to his team to explore the possibility of a convention fight is his willingness to step in and carry the party's banner into the fall general election as the Republican nominee. Another name these sources mentioned was House Speaker Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate in 2012.

I am a Cruz supporter but will vote for Trump if he wins the nomination.
If they block the leading candidate from getting the nomination at convention they are scoundrels and have no respect for the voters.
The rest are in running for VP slot at this time. Cruz will back Trump at the convention.
You have proved too dense to find your polling place, never mind to vote.
Pretty simple stuff.
I voted for Romney in 2012, unfortunately, because he’s who the Republicans stuck me with. Im in California, so obviously my vote here means nada, its the same nonsense every 4 years, they stuck us with Establishment RINO morons who have NO desire to become President, only kiss Democrat a@@. How about for ONCE they let the PEOPLE decide who they want, Trump, Cruz, Rubio, geez let the people decide!
“hope he does not fall for it.”
We need to cover him with prayer.
As far as my vote is concerned, Cruz became one of “them” last week.
Last straw.
I do hope Cruz doesn’t let himself be seen as acquiescing the GOPe’s ploy to get rid of Trump. However, your scenario doesn’t take into account the major policy differences between Trump and Cruz. Why should Cruz withdraw to support any other candidate? That would be a betrayal of his ideals and his supporters.
Yes, you are correct. A vote for Cruz is all about Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney.
I’m not sure if you’re responding to my post #56 or it’s just a case of great minds; if the latter, check out my post #56.
It used to be optional to primary Ryan. Its getting mandatory.
“That is one heck of a brilliant analysis. Thanks catnitman.”
check out my post #56 if you haven’t already seen it: it’s the rest of the stuff i realized after my original post, though 3 or 4 others who posted on this thread sussed it out too.
But, as is their want, the GOP will view posturing as FAR more important than results.
>>The 2012 GOP nominee’s advisers are examining what a fight at the convention might look like and what rules might need revising.
This is becoming the Prequel to a bad dystopian Sci-Fi movie.
Yes, he does. And the side he chooses determines how he will be viewed for the rest of his life. Kind of like in the Revolutionary War, being loyalist or American.
I stated the same - that I expected Cruz would come down hard on Romney. So...us Trump people do think... Some people don’t read.
If these assholes in the GOP keep up with this crap I am going to be pissed if I have to load up the truck and drive out to Cleveland in July and protest like a filthy hippy!
I hate that man. He’s a sellout. His F-ing beard Confirmed his smug attitude.
Not so. Apples and oranges.
If Trump doesn’t win it out right (or Cruz for that matter) it is up for grabs.
Delegates can vote for anyone on the second ballot.
I think they want Ryan. Romney may be making his case to the GOPe that it should be him.
But Trump or anyone can also try and get delegate votes.
Who is to say if Trump does not get 1237 before the convention, that Trump doesn’t hold his delegates and come up with more to win in round 2.
Why is it only GOPe?
