Mitt Romney has instructed his closest advisers to explore the possibility of stopping Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention, a source close to Romney's inner circle says.
The 2012 GOP nominee's advisers are examining what a fight at the convention might look like and what rules might need revising.
"It sounds like the plan is to lock the convention," said the source.
Romney is focused on suppressing Trump's delegate count to prevent him from accumulating the 1,237 delegates he needs to secure the nomination.
But implicit in Romney's request to his team to explore the possibility of a convention fight is his willingness to step in and carry the party's banner into the fall general election as the Republican nominee. Another name these sources mentioned was House Speaker Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate in 2012.

Now wouldn’t that be a sight to behold?
Cruz could actually make a mark in history
Instead he is plowing forward to become possibly the designated loser
“With his hypocritical and condescending little speech today being almost universally panned, I dont think Mitt will be blocking anything.
“
the thing is, Romney’s simply the front-man for the terrified GOP cabal who are trying to preserve the GOP party as they’re private club. Clearly Romney has agree to be the face of this secret bunch of power brokers, and his reward if he succeeds is another run at the Presidency. If Romney fails, then he loses nothing.
That could be the final dagger in the heart of the Establishment...although the Establishment does not have a heart.
A vote for Cruz is a vote for Romney.
I wish Jim would put that on the header of every FR page.
Sometimes I wish the Trump people would take a little time to think. Actually 90% of the time.
Mitt WANYS Hillary to win!!! It won’t make him look so PATHETIC!!! LOSER!!
The general assumption seems to be that Romney wants to stop Trump from getting the nomination, so he, Romney, will get the nomination at the convention.
Is he that stupid to think by shafting Trump and his supporters that he, Romney, would win the election if the convention did nominate him?
Talk about THE PARTY OF STUPID!
It is and there is no way of stopping Donald Trump wildfire with the Establishment.
I worked hard to get Dave Brat elected and ditch Cantor. I will not let him go down.
Jeff,
Always enjoy your posts (especially the Jerry Jeff Walker video you did a couple of years ago - didn’t save it and would love a link if you could).
I agree with you regarding Mitt’s outburst today and this is coming from someone who doesn’t like Trump in the least. Still if they try some crap like this at the Convention I will wholeheartedly campaign for Trump. I simply think there’s currently a better candidate to choose from in the race.
Best wishes from a Grangeville High and University of ID grad.
“Is Romney mentally ill? Delusional? Have a messianic complex? “
I believe Mormonism teaches that they can become the god of their own planet, so I vote for that.
“Never Trump” also means “ Never Cruz”
“Ironic when we think back to early in this political season when the RNC all but required Trump to sign a pledge to remain loyal to the Republican Party. Now that he is winning the Republican Party is not so loyal to him.”
You speak the truth. It is the Republican Party who is reneging on the deal. They will not get my vote.
I don’t think it matters. If the she-devil wins, it’s the end of the country.
Probably, but for many if not most states, it will be too late to get on the ballot.
Who put Romney in charge to overrule the votes of the party members?
They just threw Cruz, Rubio and Kasich under the bus...This is an admission that none of the three will win the race but also that none of them are being considered for the position in a brokered convention...
If Cruz is what he says he is and not just a GOPe hack, we'll see it in the debate tonight...Cruz's only chance of a political appointment or a VP position are thru Donald Trump, unless his rebellion in the Senate was all for show...
“Bottom line. Cruz needs to pick a side.”
I hate to say it but I think Cruz has chosen a side. I understand a Bush money guy signed up to the Cruz campaign. I hope I am wrong.
Up yours, idiot.
