'Not even my wife knows': secret Donald Trump voters speak out

We asked Guardian readers who are voting for Trump why they support him. From firm conservatives to fed-up liberals, their answers were revealing

The scientist who likes both Bernie and Donald (48, California) ‘I’m very concerned about radical Muslims’ I moved to San Francisco from the UK in 2000. I’m a citizen now and I voted for Obama. I am a closet Trump supporter and I haven’t told any of my friends or co-workers. They would think of me as a meat-head if they knew.

The funny thing is that I like Trump and Sanders, and there’s no party or politician for me.

It’s true.
The Hillary cabal has treated the Sanders voters so viciously and mocking them and brow beating them that they absolutely will NOT vote for Hillary.
They see how we turned on our GOPe and they are angry that they were denied a cleansing.
In 2020, the Democratic party will implode and I am hoping our brothers and sisters across the aisle are successful in throwing out their divisive DNCe and the American people get their country back.

“Sorry I know this comes as a massive surprise but elections are not won by securing only the votes of the Conservative Purity Choir.”

You speak heresy. Hasn’t it been explained to you that the reason the republicans lost the last two elections because they didn’t nominate someone who could secure the votes of the Conservative Purity Choir?

As punishment for your heresy, you must write ‘the lesser of two evils is still evil.’ one hundred times.

He probably doesn’t know any better because he only shows up for a week or two every few years.

Not a FReeper by any means.

It is a Populist revolt. Anyone who takes on the establishment has a shot.

Bernie is no worse than Rubio and pretty close to “all talk, no action” Cruz. And Bernie’s voice is much less annoying that the Canadians.

Good Lord indeed. That’s some cognitive dissonance if I ever saw any. They could vote either way, for an avowed socialist or a committed capitalist, not to mention all the other issues on which they’re miles apart? Charles Manson was “anti-establishment” too, but I think I’d need a little more to vote him into public office.

They see Clinton as just another DC insider, who will spout all the right words, but after the election will just go back to the job of enriching her fellow insiders.

Their vote for Bernie is rebellion against the political class. They are saying "ENOUGH!".

They see Trump as another person who has no loyalty to the DC political class, and thus as a way to rebel against the political class. Thus we may see a bunch of "Trump Democrats", just like we say a bunch of "Reagan Democrats" crossing over some decades ago.

They are FU to the establishment voters. The establishment of BOTH parties. Most people here dont know but they are battling the “crown Hillary” hierarchy as much as we battle the GOPe here.

I've been lurking on DU, checking out the Bernie/Hillary battles, and you are exactly right. The fights there are (almost) as nasty as the Trump vs Cruz fights over here. The Bernie supporters are against an Establishment which they increasingly see as working for its own interests, and they are pissed off.

This is not the correct headline! The Headline and the story are completely opposite of what your made up headline states.

You are not supposed to change the headlines of a published article.

The proper headline is “’Not even my wife knows’: secret Donald Trump voters speak out”

It is about secret Trump voters who would be assumed to be voting for someone else, like Bernie, but they are secretly voting Trump.

If the United States was involved in a serious war over the next few years the only men I would trust to protect the country would be Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders. Both have backbone and grit - - neither can be bought - - and they both see the world without rose colored glasses. So on some small levels this makes sense...

I would not trust Hillary or Rubio or any member of the GOPe to be city dog catcher...

Yep, he probably thinks that Venezuela is a positive role model. As usual with commies, he probably thinks that they just didn’t do it right-somehow, they never do.

Sanders may be a charmimg person, I have no idea (though it seems to me that leftists almost always lack a sense of humor), but I’m not voting for Miss Congeniality, I’m voting for the policies the candidates claim they stand for, and Sanders has claimed to support socialism (communism lite) his whole political life. I haven’t seen a nation yet where either socialism or communism was beneficial to freedom, economic well-being, or any other marker of a healthy and free nation.

I’ve been lurking on DU, they’re having a battle royale over it, but all I ever see in the media is the battle on the right, and both sides are wrong, of course.

I was a happy Reagan-Democrat in my youth and it worked out just fine for me. Worked out just fine for the Rep Party too as I switch to Rep during Reagan’s time.

Just as then just as now there will be Trump-Democrats and our Nation will be the better for it! Hopefully a tide of Tea Party candidates will replace the GOPe during Trump’s time and the Trump-Dems will become part of the NEW & Improved Republican Party.

Agree completely. Both Trump and Sanders are the only candidates who are clearly articulating the root problem--that of the endemic corruption in Washington and the political establishment. Even Cruz has said that Bernie makes some good points about what the problems are. The key difference, of course, is that while Sanders may see the problems, he has no idea how to actually solve them, whereas Trump has the experience and temperament to get the job done.

Beyond that, neither are likely to continue the policies of perpetual war in distant lands with no clearly articulated rationale and victory criteria. It should be abundantly clear that the American people are tired of the Bush/Obama policies in this area.

Marx, Lenin, Stalin and Pol Pot were sincere too. The “kids” in this country apparently have never heard about the blessings of socialism in Venezuela.

If we don’t have an electoral revolution, or failing that a physical revolution, this country is doomed to perish under some flavor of Marxism.

Did you listen to his Howard Dean speech on Tuesday night. He was repeating the lies about Trump and KKK, Trump wanting to take our guns? Trump wanting to fund abortions (after he said specifically he wouldn’t do that), Trump is mobbed up, etc. How’s that for a few. Just cause Elmer Gantry says it, doesn’t make it true. Like when his campaign posted the “Carson dropped out, vote for us” tweet.
