Romney calling Trump 'phony,' urging Republicans to shun him

Former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney is charging into the increasingly divisive White House race with a verbal lashing of Donald Trump and a plea for fellow Republicans to shun the front-runner for the good of country and party.

Romney is branding the billionaire businessman as "a phony, a fraud" whose "promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University," according to a speech Romney planned to give at the University of Utah on Thursday morning. The Associated Press obtained excerpts of his remarks in advance.

Trump, in turn, dismissed Romney as "a stiff" who "didn't know what he was doing" as the party's candidate in 2012 and blew a chance to beat President Barack Obama. "People are energized by what I'm saying" in the campaign and turning out in remarkable numbers to vote, Trump told NBC's "Today."

In ratcheting up the rhetoric, Romney cast his lot with a growing chorus of anxious Republican leaders -- people many Trump supporters view as establishment figures -- in trying to slow the New York real estate mogul's momentum.

"Here's what I know: Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud," the former Massachusetts governor said, according to the early excerpts.

But it was unclear what impact his words would have with voters deeply frustrated by their party's leaders. Trump questioned whether the party rank and file would listen to "a failed candidate" for whom "nobody came out to vote."

Romney has been chipping away at Trump in recent days, but the speech Thursday was certain to be his most forceful statement yet.

Panicked GOP leaders say they still have options for preventing Trump from winning the GOP nomination -- just not many good ones.

Romney is a looser no patriot. Conservative American’s are disgusted such HOLLOW men with vaporous voices. The establishment loathed Ronald Reagan with equal contempt.

I wasted my vote on Romney, it was a bait and switch and he turned out to be the phony. He choked and lost an election he should have one.

Now the GOPe is ordering him to be Mr. Chaos, the real Mr. Chaos. He is the Con Man and he wants Hillary elected so the GOPe can continue their martini lobbyist lunches and paid for junkets.

I didn’t plan on going door to door for Trump. The GOPe BS has inspired me to not only vote, but to become a Trump activist in by town.

I believe we are headed for “disaster “ no matter who is President. But, I sure as heck don’t want a Dem/Socialist in charge.

We got saddled with Mitt and he failed miserably. I detest all and everything he spouts. He’s a failed candidate and cannot see before his lying words that a lot of us want a leader not another empty suit with loaded GOP talking points. Go TRUMP GO!

Baloney. Candidates will continue criticizing each other as before. Cruz record of cases he’s won in Supreme Court on conservative issues speaks for itself.

Keep in mind Jeb said he would lose the primary but win the election.

The plan is to put Bush in at the convention.

Tonights debate should be very intetesting.

Look for Trump to burn down the GOPe and Mitt

I was never a big Trump fan (but I didn't hate him like so many) but he seems to be making all the right enemies. The more the GOPe and other insiders attack him the more favorable he becomes to me. While I am still a Cruz man, I wouldn't hesitate to support the Donald if he gets the nod.

If elected I still believe Trump will turn on the conservative base in many instances, and while I remain a steadfast Cruz supporter, I understand you have to pick your battles. If Trump get the nomination the main battle is to then break the back of the GOPe.

The GOPe is part of the Washington cartel. The GOPe are the donor class, who back the elected class, who repeat all the right conservative phrases at election time and then cut every backroom deal to thwart conservative values. In nearly 8 years what policy of Obama has the GOPe stopped? In 8 years, what has the GOPe prevented Obama from obtaining. The answer to both these questions is -- nothing.

The GOPe has played the base for fools year after year.

Ever notice that the GOPe consistently put up a candidate who was a solid member of the GOPe and then added a Conservative as window dressing? Let's look at the facts:

GOPe - George H.W. Bush / Conservative - Dan Quayle
GOPe - Bob Dole / Conservative - Jack Kemp
GOPe - George W. Bush / Conservative - Dick Cheney
GOPe - Juan McCain / Conservative - Sarah Palin
GOPe - Mitt Romney / Alleged at the time Conservative - Paul Ryan

See the pattern here?

Now that's a low blow.

Oh I don't doubt his credentials. But he's conservative click bait for the republican party. Throw him a bone now and then to chew on. Make a lot of noise. And keep those lowbrow conservatives voting for us Ted. If he had the skills to actually make an impact on policy he would have been long gone from Washington because no big establishment donors would give him money.

It took me a while but establishment conservatives are just as much establishment as establishment liberals. They both benefit from the system.

The GOP forced this guy down our throats and told us to buck up and support the nominee. Now, because they don’t have a candidate they can control, they’re sending Willard out to throw himself in front of the train.

As I recall, Myth had no trouble attacking Republicans in 2012. It was Obama that he wilted for.

Romney calling DTs taxes into question was despicable IMO. I think I know why he did it but THEY made one tactical error.......he had that dirty trick pulled on him by dingy harry. If someone other that Romney would have brought it up it mighta stuck.

McCain/Palin 2008 turnout was 5+ million more votes. If they had turned out for Romney, he would have buried Obama as the democrat turnout was down from 2008.
