He tapped voter anger to emerge from a primary field full of experienced Republican officeholders. A political outsider, he had a name most voters recognized, a business background fused to a populist message and, given that he was funding his own campaign, a self-avowed freedom from lobbyists and special interests.
Looking back now, its no wonder David Perdue was someone Donald Trump wanted to meet.
It was around Memorial Day of 2014 and Perdue was flying high, having advanced to a runoff as one of the top two finishers in Georgias GOP Senate primary. When Sam Nunberg, Donald Trumps top political adviser at the time, called and invited him to New York City, Perdue said yes. Over the course of the year, Trump contributed more than $1 million to the National Republican Senatorial Committee, but it was Perdues race that captured his interest an interest that was less about 2014 than 2016.
In Perdues Senate strategy, Trump saw the makings of a White House run of his own. And two years later, Trump has used that blueprint to not only capture the South, but to steal the region away from Ted Cruz on his way to the lead of the GOP primary.
We knew then Trump was going to run for president, and this was a race we could watch, said Nunberg, who left Trumps team in August of last year but is still supporting his candidacy. In terms of all the themes, the competition, this was the race Mr. Trump followed closely, as did his team, myself and [consultant] Roger [Stone]. It had the most similarities and parallels to what he wanted to do.

Trump is going to take Georgia, and I’m guessing that Rubio will win over Cruz for second place.
He earned it.
Constitution facts are no too interesting.
Oh but that can’t be true every one has told me trump only donates to democrats
Just playing in to America’s addiction to reality tv and all the fabricated drama.
IMHO Cruz sounds more like a two bit televangelist than he does a serious presidential contender. I guess he thought that act would sell in the South. Not so much...people know w phony when they see one.
I just caught something on Fox but didnt get it all....guest was saying 44% of the early/absentee voting was from Republican voters that DIDNT vote in 2012.......anyone else catch that?
In terms of conservatism, David Perdue makes us glad to have Johnny Isakson as our other senator.
Consider the electorate. Other than people from your own church or family or local gun show, they are generally not people with whom you have much in common.
He will win over 50% of the vote there
It also doesn't help Cruz that he's got that goof ball snake oils salesman/two-bit TV preacher Glenn Beck dragging him down.
Stopped at that lie.
Trump only contributes to Democrats.
Read it right here on FR first.
Yes it seems to be like the Reagan affect but for completely different reasons.
Yes...Cruz should have told Beck thanks but no thanks. But it would have been too late for me. Cruz and Beck at the border welcoming illegals with soccer balls and teddy bears did it for me.
No, folks are not taking a good look at Trump. Folks are jumping on the “I’m angry; he’s angry”, with some reality show drama mixed in.
If we would have listed Trump’s actual personal record of political views, ties and actions without a name here in the beginning, he would be the one everyone would have said needed to go.
Rigggghhht! It's not like those disqualifications haven't been posted here about a trillion times, or a bazillion times on the pages of NR and on FOX News and every other GOPe media outlet. Nobody ever heard of any of that before.
Yup...my interest in Trump began when I started noticing how little actual campaigning the other candidates were doing in comparison.
So what is the big deal that Rubio is going to get second in GA? Are you proud of this or are you paid to hate Cruz? If Rubio is your guy, good luck. We will remind you of this when Florida votes 15 days from now.
Don’t be a hater because the likelihood is very high this will happen. Also don’t accuse me of being paid for anything here. Had you ever seen my posts prior to the end of 2015, you’d have seen Cruz was my candidate, but I got tired of the viperous hate against Trump (a lot by Cruz supporters) and I decided I didn’t want to be a part of it. Go look at my posts throughout and you’ll see.
Since then, I have continually said that I like Ted and he would get my vote if he does get the nomination. You tell me that’s the same for you with Trump and the reverse, why don’t you? I have also said here continually I think Rubio is an Amnesty Snake.
You don’t know what you’re talking about, frankly. Because you don’t like it Cruz will lose, you lash out blindly - just like the rest.
And, the “big deal” is that with Rubio besting Cruz, it may well be that Texas and Iowa are the only two states he does carry. Is that “big” enough for you?
