Sowell and free traders fail to understand that while in the “long haul” free trade will eventually work and defeat closed societies, if the closed society is substantially larger than yours and has enough time, your economy crumbles before free trade can work.
It’s like attacking cancer when it’s too late. Yeah, earlier a minor operation would have worked.
Moreover, there isn’t a shred of “free trade” with China, Japan, or Mexico. It’s all HIGHLY regulated, and we have Boeing being blackmailed into giving away national security patents for airplanes that we might well need in a war.
So the libertarian version of conservatism needs to take a back seat to the American nationalism version of conservatism (we once associated this with people like George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, James Monroe, Andy Jackson, and Teddy Roosevelt).
Right. Every nation should put its own interests first in negotiations, and our imperial leader, Trump, plans to seize oil fields overseas. I hope he starts with Cuba. Then Hugo Chavez ....
