Endorsement: Marco Rubio, who's energetic, optimistic and electable
Minneapolis Star-Tribune ^ | February 26, 2016 | Editorial

Posted on 02/28/2016 5:20:33 AM PST by Oldeconomybuyer

We believe Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is best equipped to carry forward the philosophy of free people and free markets - of limited government, free trade and strong national defense - that has long animated the GOP and enriched American political life. Rubio's energetic and articulate optimism - his embodiment of a diverse and entrepreneurial youth movement in the GOP - has struck a chord with voters and has convinced a growing roster of respected Republican leaders, including Minnesota's Tim Pawlenty and Norm Coleman, that the proud son of Cuban immigrants stands the best chance of securing the nomination for the broad, responsible, practical mainstream of his party.

Rubio's ability to prevail is key, because this isn't just any year or any field of hopefuls. The insurgent candidacy of Donald Trump has unleashed a heedless xenophobic spirit that threatens to splinter the GOP and wound the country if a unifying alternative isn’t found.

We could wish that Rubio had not retreated as far as he has from his earlier leadership role in pursuing a compromise on immigration reform. But there is no doubt that he understands immigration's meaning, value and challenges viscerally, instinctively rejects Trump-style nativism and will in time have more to offer toward the issue's resolution.

Rubio's is an expansive, exuberant America, grinning ear to ear, not an America snarling and posturing behind its walls. He would give the Democrats all they could handle in the general election this fall. To get there, he needs victories, and soon. Minnesota Republicans can and should give him one.

Rubio does the nation an even bigger disservice now by abandoning his Senate seat to Alan Grayson.

Rubio has no qualifications to be President , just like Obama doesnt.

Insane for power, his little ego trip may be the difference between GOP Senate control next year.

Rubio has a three-week window after the March 15 primary to change his mind and run for his seat

The deadline for filing for Senate in Florida is May 6.

Im worried about who takes his seat.

As much as I despise the twerp, hes a lot better than Alan Grayson.

This prick had better think twice before giving up his seat to that animal.

He didn’t just support ‘amnesty’ - he supported a bill that would have destroyed America. No Rubio. Period. Also, his ‘solution’ to Obamacare is as bad or worse. I thought I would never say this about a Republican, but with his open borders/healthcare policies and what he would be able to enact as president with a compliant Ryan, he would be the 3rd term of Obama as far as damage to the country ..... and that’s without the obvious comparisons to Obama himself of: one term Senator with no accomplishments, no executive experience, no foreign policy experience, a lightweight, empty suit who lies effortlessly whenever it suits him.

I’ve been posting this - if you’ve seen it, just ignore, otherwise please read at the link - goes point by point over Rubio’s LIES regarding the Gang of 8 bill & how damaging it would have been. The “conclusion” I included as an excerpt because it really tells how dangerous to America a Rubio president (or VP) would be.

Rubio Record (immigration)
http://www.eagleforum.org/immigration/rubio-record.html

Excerpt from link “CONCLUSION”:

There is no single major distinguishing policy difference between Marco Rubio, John McCain or Lindsey Graham. They have the same trade policy, immigration policy and foreign policy. But on immigration most especially — the issue in which all four have invested the most — there is no daylight separating them.

The difference, then, is one of persona, not policy. And in the arena of immigration, this translates into a vital difference. The biggest change from McCain-Kennedy, which could not get out of the Senate, and the Gang of Eight — which was nursed along by conservative pundits despite being to the left of Kennedy’s bill — was the presence of Rubio. Rubio created the conditions necessary to produce a considerably more open borders bill: conservatives who were invested in the Rubio Brand provided no early pushback but accepted Kennedy’s old talking points, and Rubio gave red state Democrats the political space necessary to support it. This is how it got 68 votes in the Senate.

The stakes of course are raised considerably if Rubio is President or Vice President. Rubio would have a much, much better chance than Obama of getting an open borders bill through Congress — while Boehner could refuse to bring up Obama’s mass immigration/amnesty bill for vote in 2014, Ryan would never refuse Rubio’s bill. Rubio’s presence, as it did with the Gang of Eight, would create the cover for both certain Republicans and all Democrats to get behind a far more open borders plan. Given that nearly every House Democrat sponsored the Gang of Eight House version (including Pelosi and Gutierrez), Ryan would not need to gather that many additional votes (House GOP leaders might have refused Obama’s 2014 request for a vote but they would not refuse President Rubio’s).

All of which adds up to: there is likely no person in the United States of America in a better position to enact mass immigration legislation than a President Rubio — no one who could deliver more votes in both parties for open borders immigration. Senator Rubio is not Main Street’s Obama, he is Wall Street’s Obama: President Obama was a hardcore leftist running as centrist; Senator Rubio is a Wall Street globalist running as a tea party conservative.

Unlike other legislation, the effects of bad immigration policy cannot be repealed. They are forever. The Republican party would never nominate a pro-Obamacare candidate, and it must be an even stronger maxim that it should not nominate any candidate who is committed to a policy of mass immigration. Rubio wrote the Obamacare of immigration policies: a bill that would have eviscerated the middle class, plunged millions into poverty, legalized the most dangerous aliens on the planet, overwhelmed our schools and safety nets, and done irreversible violence to the idea of America as a nation-state. Rubio is the candidate of open borders, Obamatrade and mass immigration, making one last attempt to pull off one big con.

Pro-Amensty Gang of Eight. End of discussion. If he is elected, America will be destroyed quickly. You can argue that the destruction would be slower than under Hillary, but that is too fine a distinction for me to care.

If Rubio is the nominee, I will still vote, but for president I will vote third party.

This co-opted conman can't even win his own state. Drop out Marco.

Sheesh, propagandists in Minneapolis are a little late to the party.

This paper isn’t really for Rubio: it’s for Mrs. Bill, of that we can be sure.

It’s not “Hitlery”; it’s Mrs. Bill, American popular choice, with Chelsea for 2024.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune is usually referred to at the Star and Sickle, it is an extreme left-wing paper from page 1 onwards. This is not much of an endorsement of Rubio, it is a liberal paper endorsing someone they know Clinton can beat.

Donald loves Donald and that is all. Just because he wraps himself in a flag is meaningless.

I, and many I know, are sitting this one out.
