Donald Trump says he cannot release his tax returns because he is undergoing an audit that goes back four or five years.
But the Internal Revenue Service usually does not look back more than three years.
Generally, the IRS can include returns filed within the last three years in an audit, the agencys website says. Additional years can be added if a substantial error is identified.
The IRS further reports, The statute of limitations limits the time allowed to assess additional tax. The statute of limitations is generally three years after a return is due or was filed, whichever is later. Either Trump is lying about undergoing such an audit as an excuse not to release his returns, or the IRS has found that his most recent return includes an error considerably bigger than a simple oversight. Whatever the truth, an audit should not preclude releasing his returns.
Meanwhile, Trump has tweeted a photo of himself with a pen and a stack of papers.
Signing a recent tax returnisnt this ridiculous? he wrote on Thursday.
In October, Trump had initially said that he would release his tax returns after Hillary Clinton released all her emails.
But I will say this, and Im very proud to say it, I think the country is run horribly. I hate what they do with our money, Trump noted at the time. And unlike everybody else, I try to pay as little tax as possible, because I hate what they do with my tax money.
He added, Its a little tax.
In January, Trump indicated that the release was imminent.
Were working on that now. I have big returns, as you know, and I have everything all approved and very beautiful and well be working that over in the next period of time,

Why do Thumpers always answer legitimate questions about Donald with attacks on the poster?
Maybe our tax system is a corrupt joke as you say.
But The Donald doesn’t want to fix it. He said so in the debate. He claims we need the taxes to get the deficit down.
I have a strange feeling that Trump would find a way to spend that money himself.
Ted Cruz has a plan that will eventually eliminate the IRS and create a fair and simple tax system.
So if you hate the tax system, perhaps you should consider changing your vote to Cruz.
You are correct. The IRS under Obama has been corrupt and it will continue to be under Hillary.
But The Donald has no problem with the present system.
I have a feeling the IRS would find its own avenue of corruption under the Donald.
We need a candidate who wants tax reform. Trump does not.
I was furious at CNN for not shutting Trump’s manic interruptions down. It was ridiculous. He could not shut up and he wasn’t saying anything.
He has a limited vocabulary and a limited mind.
He does have some sort of mental or emotional problem.
I think he’s mildly bi-polar. When he’s on one of those highs, you can’t shut him up. He was sweating like a pig backstage before the debate and he was so wound up he could not stop talking.
When the highs dip down, he gets out those short fingers and tweets till dawn.
That might work if his returns were completely above board but I doubt seriously if they are.
With all the accountants on his payroll, he should not have to be audited every year.
He implied it was because they’re after him but most businesses are not routinely audited.
Trump has so many liberal ties and liberal friends and liberal stances, he probably thought it was a liberal forum.
If it were Rubio or Cruz refusing to release returns or anything else, the Trumpers would be screaming bloody murder.
So now they are just fine with Trump concealing his.
Is it just Trump afraid of what the returns will show or are his followers afraid of that also.
They are so frantically defending his right not to release them, one wonders.
It’s not a phony scandal or even a real scandal.
It’s just odd and people are bound to wonder what he is hiding.
That is, most people are wondering. Not the Trumpers, of course.
As for scandals, oh yeah, we got scandals for you.
Although they look a bit different, I think you are right about Trump being as much a narcissist as Obama.
Nobody who wants the IRS like Mr. Trump will get rid of it but most people want a simplified tax plan and would like to get rid of the IRS.
You have to care and you have to try to get anything done.
If you have a totally defeatist attitude, as you seem to, of course nothing will happen.
You are right and he was right.
From what I see on this forum is a total lack of interest in knowing anything about Trump.
The Trumpers get off on being nasty to posters who bring up unwelcome topics but never want to know the truth about anything Trump.
Seeing him go ballistic on the debate stage, almost crazed and manic and babbling apparently did not bother them at all.
So, yeah, shooting someone...no biggie.
Maybe he could even kick a puppy.
You are guessing right.
It’s hyperbole like yours that keeps people from delving into every hysterical claim of the other whiny candidates.
It’s so unhinged and over the top that it rolls right off most voters like water off a Ducks back.
And please don’t pretend as if there’s any civility towards the Trump supporters.
God forbid we don’t march lock step with the same people who keep producing losing candidates then we’re simply attacked.
Seriously! I hope he never releases them just to see the unhinged LIBS and whiny Cuban Senators finally pop their tops.
Who cares?? What business is it of your anyway? Just another nosy liberal.
Mr. Trump should rent out a stadium, a YUGE one, get copies made of his tax returns, put it all up on the jumbotrons, charge $50 a ticket, send all the proceeds to the vets.
And nothing gets shown until at least 100,000 tickets are sold.
No, your mistakes. I know, when I was a waitress, one year I forgot to report allocated tips. ($400 of income). Just under 3 years later I got a 20 page letter from them detailing the unreported income on my W-2 and how much fines and penalties I had racked up over the 3 years. What made it even more excruciating was they made a math error and had doubled everything ($400 became 800 etc). So I had to admit an error but also correct them. This was before computers and internet so I had to hand write and snail mail my explanation and defense. Every time I called, my “file” had mysteriously gone to someone else’s desk or office. It took weeks and weeks to get it straightened out. All over $400 in unreported income from someone who maybe made $15,000 that year. There are many many horrible things going on in our government today, the IRS is just one of them. Sadly much of it is because we as a people trusted the government to do right, and we haven’t been watching.
I could give a flip about Mr. Trump’s tax returns. I care about his positions on life, liberty, border security, over regulation, deficit spending, national security, and states rights.
