Trump wants to 'open up' libel laws to sue media outlets

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump on Friday vowed to "open up" libel laws in order to sue media outlets that write "purposely negative" and "horrible" articles about him.

"I’m gonna open up our libel laws, so when they write purposely negative and horrible, false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money," Trump said at a rally in Fort Worth, Texas.

"We’re going to open up those libels laws," he added. "So that when The New York Times writes a hit piece, which is a total disgrace, or when The Washington Post, which is there for other reasons, writes a hit piece, we can sue them and win money."

Regardless of whether the Senate Republicans have the minimal balls necessary to block Obama’s replacement for Scalia, there are still three Justices left on the Court who are over the age of 80.

The next President will determine the direction of the Supreme Court for the next 30 years. Either we are going to have a far left-wing oligarchy legislating from the bench for another generation, or we will not.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Trump would have a historic loss in the general under normal circumstances, but we never know if some bombshell comes out on Hillary at the last minute. Not that she would be better.

Good, newspapers that don’t exhibit any signs of journalism and instead are actually activist corporations that print pamplets, then they should be open to libel.

Under today's libel laws the public figure can not sue. If the libel laws were a bit looser, the public figure can sue.

I was positive Trump saying he reads the Bible more than anyone was the stupidest remark he could possibly utter during this campaign.

And here he is topping himself 48 hours later.

You can’t sue people for writing bad things about you. That’s called free speech.

Actually you can, it's called libel. Newspaper political activists writing opinion pieces under the guise of journalism actual do not deserve the protections that journalists might actually earn.

I think it’s okay to sue liars, even if they are in the media. If someone knowingly, criminally slanders someone, then I don’t really care if the slandered person is a public figure or not.

So you don’t like free speech. Are you opposed to the 2nd amendment too?

Opinion is exactly what the First Amendment was intended to protect.

Look up John Peter Zenger (from my home area, BTW) and get back to me.

Under today's libel laws the public figure can not sue.

Sure they can. They just have a higher hurdle than the rest of us.

I don’t know if this is right or wrong. We do not now have a free press (although many go along willingly), nor do we have a responsible press - not by a long shot.

The public school system and big media shoulder 90% of why we’re in the situation we find ourselves. There is no denying that.

Mr. Trump is correct in principle, there should be consequences for deliberate lying and misrepresenting the facts.

Opinion is exactly what the First Amendment was intended to protect.

As long as it's not libelous.
