Trump wants to 'open up' libel laws to sue media outlets

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump on Friday vowed to "open up" libel laws in order to sue media outlets that write "purposely negative" and "horrible" articles about him.

"I’m gonna open up our libel laws, so when they write purposely negative and horrible, false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money," Trump said at a rally in Fort Worth, Texas.

"We’re going to open up those libels laws," he added. "So that when The New York Times writes a hit piece, which is a total disgrace, or when The Washington Post, which is there for other reasons, writes a hit piece, we can sue them and win money."

So they can’t tell the truth about him.

Because the government should have as little control over the media as possible.

You can’t sue people for writing bad things about you. That’s called free speech.

The Big Media should be broken up. No national TV station, that is also a ‘News Outlet’ should have more than a handful of affiliates, and no more than a viewership of say thirty million.

Not having to prove actual malice when you are a public figure would cut down on stories such as, “Donald Trump inherited $200 million”. That and “Looser pays” and we might have a less litigious society.

Something needs to keep the media in check so they stop acting as a facilitator/enabler of the state’s political whims. The founding idea was that of a free press, not a govt press.

Not sure yet what a solution would be.

No, cuz it’s a matter of statute, either state or federal, or case law, NOT a matter for POTUS. It’s another ignorant, egotistical, “I’m the only guy who can do it” statement that makes him look like a clown.

You can, however, sue people for writing purposed and malicious lies.

Any negative statement will be greeted with litigation. Any. How long will the media be free to disagree with The Great and Wonderful Trump?

Or is a State run media okay because your guy wants to beat them into unwilling parrots with squadrons of lawyers?

Better healthy dissent! At least you are free to disagree with the news reports, as we have for the last 40-50 years.

Proving libel for a public figure is much more difficult than proving it for a non-public figure. You have to prove actual malice for a public figure.

As a Trumpian I admit this is dopey, but for one tiny sliver. The media bear no responsibility or ultimate consequence for anything they say save “malice aforethought” and total immunity for what they do to those “in the public eye”. In a real free market so be it. But in a litigious society they shouldn’t have such a loose standard. Covering culture and current events doesn’t extend to lying about them.
