It’s time to start speculating about Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick
The Washington Post ^ | February 23, 2016 | Chris Cillizza

On "Morning Joe" Tuesday morning, host Mika Brzezinski threw out an interesting theory: Donald Trump and Marco Rubio are playing nice with one another — and savaging Ted Cruz — because a backroom deal has been cut between the two to form a ticket with Trump as the presidential nominee and the Florida senator as the second in command.

I don't think that deal has been cut. But Brzezinski's speculation did get me to thinking about whom Trump might pick as his vice president. (For those of you who think such speculation is premature, I say (1) it sort of is and (2) read this.)

“I, too, think that Palin’s window of opportunity has passed, not that she’s damaged per se, but more like always a bridesmaid but never the bride. That said, I do think there is still a place for her in a Cabinet position.”

I do to. She came out early on and supported Trump. He will remember that.

“If Trump doesn’t pick Cruz, then he will not get my vote.”

That is fine. Plenty of new voters and cross-over voters will take your place.

For the black vote? Not a chance.

There are 12th Amendment issues with Giuliani.

“What it Trump were to name Allen West? West is military and would help in Florida and with veterans, and Trump wants to fix Veteran Administration. West might also finally break out as a role model for African-Americans who are finally ready to cross over to vote for Trump.”

That is a possibility. Trump would most likely get 25% of the Black vote and that would kill Hillary.

Trump’s V.P. pick will be the first time his supporters realize he’s not conservative and wouldn’t know how to identify a conservative if he tried, even though he won’t. Conservatives will become his newest ex-wife very quickly. Wham, bam, thank you, ma’am. His V.P. pick will be all about strategy, just like his whole presidency will be. If the Senate flips to the Dems, you’ll see Trump cut so many deals to get a “win” it’ll make your head spin.

Rubio is the likely pick because it lets him check off the “minority” box and helps him win a state he needs. If Trump wanted to be consistent with his newfound conservative immigration stance, he would have to pick Cruz, Santorum or someone more obscure than we know about. We’ll see if he does.

I’ve always been partial to Jeff Sessions. I believe he was advising Trump at the outset of the campaign.

Definitely not Rubio! The last thing Trump needs is a amnesty-loving pipsqueak.

Giuliani is good but it would be “too much New York”, I think.

Huck for Press Secretary.
Newt for Chief of Staff.

Nah. I didn’t suggest them for that reason anyway. FYI. :-)

Herman Cain is a political outsider who was popular with conservatives when he attempted a run at the Presidency a few election cycles back. He has already spoken at a few Trump campaign stops and is well-liked and respected.

LTC Allen West is a perfect VP pic for his military experience and conservative bona-fides. He stood by Palin and proved he isn’t afraid to go toe-to-toe with the media establishment. A strong fighter and loyal man.

After having publicly said he believes Cruz is ineligible there is no way Trump can pick him, even if Cruz was interested.

I like Walker. Let's not forget the most important job of a VP...take the vplace of the Prez in the event he becomes incapacitated, etc...

Rubio doesn't do it for me.

I’ve been wondering how Newt would be for a VP pick

If not a VP, part of his kitchen cabinet.

Many have said that, but W and Cheney made it work.

Cheney changed his residency back to Wyoming, where at least he had a connection. Neither Trump or Giuliani have lived anywhere but New York.

Amen brother:

But after seeing Cruz up close for the last month or so, I no longer want Cruz anywhere near the ticket. Or on SCOTUS. And I see no reason to try and entice people like you by saying otherwise. Trump is racking up win after win without the Cruz Trump haters.

I said that to someone this morning and he reminded me that in all our history only four VP’s have been elected President. A few more served out a portion of the President’s term and then were re-elected,

Four sitting Vice Presidents were elected President

1. John Adams (1789-1797) was elected President in 1796.
2. Thomas Jefferson (1797-1801) was elected President in 1800.
3. Martin Van Buren (1833-1837) was elected President in 1836.
4. George H. W. Bush (1981-1989) was elected President in 1988.

One non-sitting former Vice President was elected President

* Richard Nixon was elected President in 1968. He had been Vice President to Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953 to 1961.

Theodore Roosevelt became President when William McKinley was assassinated; then was elected to full term. Did not seek re-election. Four years after leaving office, ran again and lost.
Calvin Coolidge became President when Warren Harding died; then was elected to full term. Did not seek re-election.
Harry S. Truman became President when Franklin D. Roosevelt died; then was elected to full term.
8. Lyndon B. Johnson became President when John F. Kennedy was assassinated; then was elected to full term. Did not seek re-election.
