Systemic failures allowed man accused in motor vehicle homicide to vanish

Sarah Root is dead.

Eswin Mejia is missing.

And authorities are scrambling to answer how the 19-year-old accused drunken driver went missing just days after his arrest in Root’s death.

A World-Herald review of Mejia’s case shows a systemic failure — from county pretrial release staff to the county judge to federal immigration enforcement officials — to ensure that the man charged with felony motor-vehicle homicide in Root’s death would answer in court to the charge.

“He’s gone,” a law enforcement official told The World-Herald.

He’s gone because of a lack of communication and common sense among governmental agencies, Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said.

The young lady, Sarah Root was my daughter's best friend. I've posted several threads about her.

The common practice is for drunk illegals who are involved in fatal wrecks to run back to Mexico, wait for things to cool off, and stroll back across the border and repeat the activity.

Was he, by any chance, a Mexican?

Agreed. Couple issues with the article. She was pronounced brain dead over the weekend, but allowed to live on life support until Wednesday to allow the drugs to exit her body as she was an organ donor. There was another article about her helping 6 people thru organ donation and another couple dozen thru tissue donations.

The mother never left the hospital. Largest and saddest funeral I ever attended.

I know several people had tried contacting Donald about this as it was at the end of the Iowa caucus and she was from Council Bluffs, Iowa but killed in Nebraska.

Underage drunk Illegal kills one of our best and brightest then gets a low enough bail, he can skip back to Honduras.

Did I misrepresent anything here?
If not, why in God’s name is Douglas County Judge Jeff Marcuzzo still on the bench?
I am thinking we need a return to the days of tar and feathers for people like this “judge”.
As for Eswin Mejia?
Maybe we need to lock Jeff Marcuzzo up until ICE returns Mejia to Douglas County for trial.

This is all a result of the administration standdown order about a month ago ...the department of justice has given clear directions to judges and local police departments to standdown under penalty....that’s why he was released on a $5000 bail. It’s Saul Alynski- Cloward and Piven..... Overwhelm the system; create panic and mayhem. Watch, prepare, protect, and trust the Lord with all your heart.

I think they should try the defendant in absentia.
If he is found guilty the judge, magistrate or whoever let the missing defendant out on bail PULLS THE JAIL SENTENCE until the runaway convict IS RECOVERED AND IMPRISONED!
Furthermore an additional charge of Felony Flight should be added.
Any jail time for the FF charge should be assigned to run CONSECUTIVELY!
AFTER the sentence for the original charge is served.
No more garbage of sentences for separate charges being served concurrently, at the same time.

Or if the missing criminal had a lawyer that helped get low bail let the lawyer serve the time.

I like the judge/magistrate serving the sentence best.
They are rarely held accountable for their screw ups.

I used to live in NW Washington State. One of my colleagues in Border Patrol used to work up info packets on deported felons returning to the local area. His first step was to pull up their DMV records. The vast majority of these deportees would make DMV their first stop after getting to the area to pick up a brand new driver's license. They felt so little fear that they would use their own name.

This deferral program is a huge problem. It used to be if you were working a serious criminal case, and the case fell apart, you could at least round up the players and deport them. Now those people walk free. The number of people on deferral who have criminal records and/or gang affiliations shows the mountain of lies upon which the program is built.

And so far we only have one GOP candidate who appears solid on the issue of immigration and that is Trump. Everyone of these type cases should be emailed to your favorite candidates and they should be asked to comment on the record. It seems that our elite uniparty politicians care little about the lives and welfare of our own citizens..but rather they are pandering to a minority for cheap labor and cheap votes.

If Trump gets elected and the forgets his promises about illegal labor, I won’t be surprised.
