Former Vice President Dick Cheney, who served alongside former President George W. Bush, issued a bold criticism of Republican presidential contender Donald Trump Monday, saying the billionaire âsounds like a liberal Democratâ when it comes to the Iraq war and 9/11.
âYou heard at the debate Saturday Donald Trump accuse President Bush and his team of purposefully lying the country into war in Iraq, saying, âI will tell you they lied, they said there were weapons of mass destruction, there were none. They knew there were none.â Your response?â Fox News anchor Bret Baier asked.
The former vice president was quick to voice his feelings, telling the âSpecial Reportâ host that not only does he believe the billionaire businessman is wrong, but he also said he âsounds like a liberal Democrat.â
âHe sounds like a liberal Democrat to me, Bret. Heâs wrong and I think heâs deliberately promoting those views in order to advance his political interests,â Cheney said.
Regarding Trumpâs claim that the Bush administration âliedâ about having weapons of mass destruction, Cheney cited the investigation by the Robb-Silberman Commission, telling Baier that âthey found no evidence whatsoeverâ to support the GOP hopefulâs assertions.
As for Trumpâs comments during Saturdayâs debate that Bush did not keep the U.S. safe because âthe World Trade Center came down during [his] reign,â Cheney argued there was ânothingâ that could be done.
âOn the notion, for example, that the president failed to act before 9/11 to stop it, we had no actionable intelligence at that point. It simply wasnât available. There was nothing we could have done and we didnât have intelligence at that point to suggest other than thereâs a general kind of a threat,â Cheney said.
The former vice president went on to defend the polices he and Bush instituted, saying that the Bush White House did âkeep the nation safe for 7 1/2 years.
âThe president put in place important programs, the terrorist surveillance program, enhanced terrorist techniques, all of those things gave us the information we needed to be able to act, and we had the tremendous support of the American military, they did a superb job,â Cheney added.
Cheney added that Iraq was in âgreat shapeâ when he left Washington, D.C. As for what has happened since, the former vice president placed the blame on President Barack Obamaâs policies.
âWhat happened then was that Barack Obama came to town, withdrew presence from that part of the world, and ISIS emerged after that. Youâve got to tell the whole story if you want to focus on those events. And, of course, Mr. Trump never does,â Cheney said.
Cheney told Baier is it âhard to tellâ if Trump is a Republican, but ultimately said he would support the GOP presidential nominee. However, he says Trump wonât be selected if he continues to act the way he is.
âIf he continues operating the way heâs operating, as a liberal Democrat, I donât think heâll get the nomination,â he said.

Provide a link, that proves that Trump knew what some contractor was doing.
The counter argument would be that the foreign policy of Barack Hussein Obama brought about the chaos in the region. Examples would be the support of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, serving as al Qaeda’s Air Force in Libya, the Iraq withdrawal, financing and arming the Jihadists in Syria while trying to duplicate Libya. I supported the War and to they extent mistakes were made we shouldn’t have embarked on nation building fro ‘democracy’ in Iraq.
Stop whining, Cruzoids and Trumpoids have both been playing the same game with both side pointing fingers and sounding like my children when they were three and four with they started it first. I can't wait until the primaries are over!
No, not contractors..and that doesn’t excuse it either.
I know. And the counter to that might be we should not have been there in the first place. Vietnam all over again. As Reagan said, we will never again ask young men to fight and possibly die in a war our government is afraid to let them win.
Cheney sounds like a liberal Democrat on ‘gay rights’.
As usual it’s a question of whose bull s getting gored or whose daughter is taking a licking.
Dick Cheney, whose early driving career (back to back DUi’s) would make him a felon in the current climate.
Who then shoots somebody in the face while drinking, in office.
I’ll take a sober man, successful in the business world than a government War Profiteer.
..and I still respect VP Cheney, but that’s “politician’ grade respect.
He even sounds like a liberal Democrat on immigration policy
after the last election. Trump sure do evolve a lot don’t he?
Donald Trump: Mitt Romney’s Immigration Policy Was ‘Maniacal’

Real estate mogul Donald Trump recently reflected on former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s loss, telling Newsmax that the candidate failed to resonate among certain demographics in part because of his “maniacal” immigration policy.
“He had a crazy policy of self-deportation, which was maniacal,” Trump said. “It sounded as bad as it was, and he lost all of the Latino vote ... He lost the Asian vote. He lost everybody who is inspired to come into this country.”
Romney first unveiled the “self-deportation” idea in a debate in January, explaining that he supported strict standards on employment that he claimed would force undocumented immigrants to return to their home countries.
Trump accused Democrats of not having anything meaningful to offer in the field of immigration policy, but said that the party benefited from at least appearing to have the interests of immigrants in mind.
“The Democrats didnât have a policy for dealing with illegal immigrants,” Trump told Newsmax. “But what they did have going for them is they weren’t mean-spirited about it.”
Republicans have been quick to admit failures in outreach in the wake of an election that showed Latino support for President Barack Obama above 70 percent. Just days after Romney’s loss, top party officials were publicly rethinking their tune on immigration reform, suggesting that a comprehensive plan would be a priority.
But Trump was actually ahead of the curve in this field of thought. Over the summer, he explained his reservations about a hardline immigration policy popular among some Republicans.
“For people that have been here for years that have been hard-workers, have good jobs, they’re supporting their family — it’s very, very tough to just say, ‘By the way, 22 years, you have to leave. Get out,’” he said during an appearance on Fox News. “I’m one of the world’s very conservative people, but I have to tell you on a human basis, how do you throw somebody out that’s lived in this country for 20 years.”
Zombies posting tonight.
Understood, Jim. But you know very well that Pat Buchanan never sounded like Medea Benjamin or Cindy Sheehan when it came to the Iraq war. Therein lies the big difference—tone and language.
Is this the same Pat Buchanan whom Trump called a “ Hitler-lover”?
Trump is a liberal opportunist. We need a strong conservative voice.
***
Well, we don’t have one.
I will freely admit that I’m guilty of that.
But at the same time, I agree. Want primaries over; I want to see us united again.
Mr Cheney , why did you let Karl Rove dissuade W from revealing fhere really were WMD’s in Iraq ?... Thus allowing that myth to perpetuate until this day
Just catching up with Trumpanzees tactics.
Wonder what Buchanan thinks of Trump? I know the liberals all hate his tone and language.
“You draft dodging POS.”
You shouldn’t call Cheney that. He was very clear that he had “better things to do” than to serve. I’ll never understand the whacked out cult that worships Cheney and fancies him as a tough guy.
Cheney, the fascist that helped give us the TSA to strip search us at airports and expanded the NSA to listen and collect all of our information. I don’t think I’ll take my political advice from a fascist.
Agreed, but I will have a hell of a time if it turns out it's rubita.
