He has broken with many Republicans on taxing the rich, threatening trade wars and keeping Planned Parenthood alive. On Friday, Donald J. Trump faced criticism for an even bolder act of conservative heresy: embracing the core tenet of the Affordable Care Act.
Mr. Trump has to date offered only bits and pieces of his health agenda, generally presenting a vow to repeal "Obamacare" and replace it with "something great."
In a town-hall meeting hosted by CNN on Thursday night, he shared some more expansive views on the subject, and unlike most Republicans he did not call for removing the individual mandate that requires Americans to have health insurance.
Asked how people with pre-existing medical conditions would purchase insurance if the health law and the mandate were eliminated, Mr. Trump said, "I like the mandate."
"So here's where I'm a little bit different," he continued. "I don't want people dying on the streets."
Less than 24 hours later, Mr. Trump backed away from his remarks, proclaiming himself to be the fiercest opponent of the health law. It was the latest example of a candidate who has been impervious to inconsistencies again emerging unscathed from a misstep that would probably be damaging to anyone else....

Why would Trump saying I “like the mandate” shock anybody??? He’s never been a conservative for 60 years. For his whole life, he has been a part of and comfortable with the highly secular north east mentality, with its acceptance of the role of big government. He probably had no problem with Bloomberg’s banning of Big Gulps either.
I saw the Town Hall it was clear that’s exactly what he meant.
I have noticed that. Taking stuff out of context and weaving the most amazing gobblygook out of it.
This is why, when I see a report that Trump just called for nuking the world, I tend to grin and wait to see how it shakes out. I kind of mean it too. If Trump suggested that we give nuclear power plants to poor countries, the NYT would probably say that Trump just recommended nuking the world.
70 years, actually.
He’s been a free thinker and a redneck rassler. It shows.
I saw the town hall as well seems to me you heard what you wanted to hear, but that isn’t any real surprise.
Under what provision of the Constitution does it authorize Congress to compel hospitals to treat people who are not going to pay for their services?
I can't find it.
Perhaps Mr. Trump, that great constitutional scholar, can point it out for all of us.
Perhaps not.
Excuse me but he was talking about medical!!!
I might add, he broke with many Republicans when he was exposed as an egregious liar and ultimate hypocrite in denying his actual support for the war in Iraq even as he accused others of lying.
And where in the Constitution does it authorize the Federal Government to institute THAT mandate?
Article, section, clause.
Take your time. I'll be here.
It was a golden shackle attached to Medicare/Medicaid eligibility prior to the Obamacare fiasco, as best as I recall (and please be gentle if I’m off base about that).
Complain about the constitutionality of Medicare/Medicaid, but not about what’s tied to them if they somehow are thus.
One thing that sold Obamacare to hospitals was the supposed feature that they would never have to eat such bills again.
Mayor Kate Hennings: "I've never met anyone so manipulative, so deceitful, and I'm in politics."
That's how I feel about Cruz, even for politics he's low.
Trump wasn’t talking about healthcare at all. He thought he was talking about Obama and Reggie. That’s the Man date he liked. Geez, you Cruzers really like to lie.

If you mush issues together enough you can call anybody a liar. Such accusations very rarely hold up when examined closely.
Nobody is shocked.
That’s a whole different conversation. Trump was accused of supporting the Obamacare mandate on every damn news channel, by every print source, and he didn’t do it.
Whether or not you agree with what he actually said isn’t the point. It’s the repeated false accusations by a supposedly responsible media that’s the worst. I remember once upon a time when journalists actually confirmed stories before going viral. Way back when.
He said he likes the mandate. No matter what kind of "mandate" he supports, it is not a constitutional position. The Federal Government has no constitutional authority to mandate that insurance companies pay for pre-existing conditions or that individuals must purchase health care.
Where are the constitutional conservatives on this forum that used to oppose such nonsense?
Is Donald Trump putting pods next to their beds at night?
MANDATES ARE UNCONSTITUTIONAL!!!
DONALD TRUMP SUPPORTS UNCONSTITUTIONAL MANDATES!!!
He’s a lawyer they are ALL lawyers what would you expect !!!!
Thank you for including your icon on all your posts. It makes them so much easier to skip.
I appreciate the New York Times being so concerned for Trump.
From what I can tell, Trump’s “triage” amounted to a tweet to point out to people that he was referring to the pre-existing conditions coverage (which is what Anderson Cooper asked about), and pointed out that he’s been for repealing Obamacare since forever.
I have a question. Since the GOPe, including Ted Cruz, have taken over Congress, what have they done to repeal Obamacare?
Nothing. They just all yell about Donald Trump at this point.
GO TRUMP! Bring the jobs back and shut all these Washington idiots up.
Right, the GOPe made him say he supported the mandate in Obamacare just like we can ignore his “unRepublican” healthcare views in the 60 minutes interview or his embrace of socialized medicine. Donald Trump specifically said he believes healthcare is an entitlement from birth. He’s in complete agreement with Bernie Sanders.
