The Apple ID passcode for the San Bernardino shooter's iPhone was changed less than 24 hours after authorities took possession of the device, a senior Apple executive said today.
And Apple could have recovered information from the phone had the Apple ID passcode not been changed, Apple said.
If the phone was taken to a location where it recognized the Wi-Fi network, such as the San Bernardino shooters' home, it could have been backed up to the cloud, Apple suggested. ... The auto reset was executed by a county information technology employee, according to a federal official. Federal investigators only found out about the reset after it had occurred and that the county employee acted on his own, not on the orders of federal authorities, the source said.

“How do you feel about the millions of people who use encryption to protect themselves from thieves?”
It would be awful. If Apple is stupid enough to let the encryption out after using it to datamine this one, they would be even worse than I thought.
Sorry, I forgot...one other thing. You are an idiot.
Is that you, Trump? Or can’t you think of anything other than ad hominem?
Funny. My naivete is something about which you know nothing. How many FBI agents do you think want to look at your "private information" enough to go through the hassle of getting a Judge to grant a warrant to look at everybody's phone? THERE STILL HAS TO BE PROBABLE CAUSE YOU IDIOT. But if a phone is encrypted, it is up to the US to crack it. I'm OK with that. If they get a warrant, as they have done with respect to this particular case of this murdering allah worshipper and his killer wife, I'm good with that.
I have never advocated removing the need for probable cause and a warrant. Some of the ridiculous shit you post makes me wonder at your idiocy. No one is saying that they hack anyone anytime, as you would have them believe. You paranoid nutbags are determined to make the 4th amendment too weak to mean anything.
Unless you yourself are selling pictures of kids or dealing drugs or plotting to blow shit up, this is no big deal. No one is asking to change the world to warrantless searches, ESPECIALLY me. Why you don't get that through your thick goddam heads is beyond me. This is a marketing ploy to sell to all the third world shitheels who do business with dictators, mullahs and traffickers. And since most of them have nothing resembling the common sense of the 4th amendment, that is who it appeals to. Well, them and you, apparently.
“Is that you, Trump? Or canât you think of anything other than ad hominem?”
Stop making it so easy with your moronic drivel.
You know what you sound like? A gun-grabber. You are using the same sort of drivel to justify granting the govt. more tools of intrusion as the grabbers do to try and justify “common sense gun control”. Seriously? You’re going to play the “if you aren’t a criminal, you have nothing to worry about” game? The “the govt. will never violate the Xth Amendment” game? The “it’s for our own protection, and if it can save ONE life it’s worth it” game?
A criminal needs no probable cause to steal your data. Neither do foreign powers. Even if, for some incredibly naive reason, you believe that the US govt. will never abuse the use of this spying software crack to gain private information without benefit of a warrant (and I advise you to look into them doing exactly that, under Patriot Act provisions), the 4th A. will be cheerfully ignored by criminal and foreign actors, and any other hacker who gains the ability via this method. And once the method is out there, they WILL gain that ability; it’s only a matter of time.
You say you aren’t advocating intrusive searches of private data, but you’ve spent the last couple dozen posts advocating a private corporation be compelled to create a tool for exactly that purpose. What the hell do you suppose it will be used for? Only searches that the FBI pinky swears are on the up-n-up? Only searches the NSA pinky swears are not on American citizens? Only stuff some Clinton appointed judge signs off on for an Eric Holder clone to act on? “Trust us, we’re from the govt.” And that’s a best case scenario.
I sure hope you aren’t in any business that is subject to having trade secrets or confidential agreements stolen, given your cavalier attitude about securing data.
“I sure hope you arenât in any business that is subject to having trade secrets or confidential agreements stolen, given your cavalier attitude about securing data.”
In my time in business I’m 4-0 in lawsuits that involved exactly this type of horse manure. Compelling information during discovery led to 3 settlements and the 4th was won because of thoroughly going through all evidence available in front of a Judge. If not for turning up information in discovery in the last case, I would have lost everything. So, yeah, I got reasons to make sure that crooked mf’ers don’t get away with ore than we have to let them. If law and order bothers you bud, that says more bout you than me.
Gun grabber? You got a serious case of having no idea of wtf you are talking about or who you are mystically readin. I hope you aren’t a shrink.
“You know what you sound like? A gun-grabber. You are using the same sort of drivel to justify granting the govt. more tools of intrusion as the grabbers do to try and justify âcommon sense gun controlâ. Seriously? Youâre going to play the âif you arenât a criminal, you have nothing to worry aboutâ game? The âthe govt. will never violate the Xth Amendmentâ game? The âitâs for our own protection, and if it can save ONE life itâs worth itâ game?”
Hey, the ACLU is recruiting. They love to put words in peoples mouths over there, too. Among other things. I have not focused on criminal laws or data mining. I have been, in fact, almost exclusively focused on business and civil laws that are going to be most harmed. And small business runs America. That’s why we are going sideways in this depression the last decade. That’s where the majority of Americans are hit by this kind of stuff. We can’t manufacture, we can’t hire and we can’t increase wealth for the majority of flat lined middle class, we’re fucked anyway!
Oh. And for the record, I am not only not a gun grabber, but have used and owned quite a few. Unfortunately, most were lost a while back in a tragic deep sea boating accident. Nothing gets taken from those who don’t have anything to take, right sport?
Hmmm. Concealing ownership and lying to the govt. about what arms you own? Hope that some Janet Reno type doesn’t gin up a search warrant on your place. But don’t worry... no US official would ever think of abusing the 4th Amendment, right sport? And that wouldn’t happen unless you were a criminal with something to hide, right sport? No need to take proactive measures to hide your weapons.
You know, the same could be said for automatic data wiping protocols: Nothing gets taken from those who don’t have anything to take, right sport?
Hmmm. Concealing ownership and lying to the govt. about what arms you own?
Reading shit into something that was never said again? Nasty habit.
Were you lying about that boating accident? Interested BATF parties want to know....
Come on.... you have nothing to hide if you aren’t a criminal.
“Come on.... you have nothing to hide if you arenât a criminal.”
I have a right to absolute privacy!
Do us all a favor. Go home, turn off your lights, lock the door and exercise that right, alone in the dark. It will keep you safe from the terrorists.
Backdooring everyone’s phone will not.
“Do us all a favor. Go home, turn off your lights, lock the door and exercise that right, alone in the dark. It will keep you safe from the terrorists.”
If you say so, Rex.
