Could someone enlighten me as to HOW these people were FORCED to train their replacements? Why could they not just walk away with a big middle finger to everyone? Was there some contractual obligation? I realize some people cannot do this while looking for another job, but I imagine that SOME did.

Severance pay is predicated upon training their replacement. Refuse and lose severance.
Refuse and you lose severance and you are let go that day.
Train your replacement and usually the pot is sweetened with $$ plus more time on the job which allows you to remain in paid status while you look for other work.
My guess is that these people had been there for some time and are older IT workers ... in Florida ... not exactly prime job hopping age or area.

Thank you both for your replies. Understand now. My first instinct would be the middle finger, but I can understand the dilemma that would place on people. I’m sure the majority would have LOVED to do that if they had the means.
