Byron York: In South Carolina, Bush family, friends gather as end nears
Washington Examiner ^ | February 19, 2016 | Byron York

Jeb Bush's brother, the former president, his sister-in-law, the former first lady, his mother, his sister, another brother, and of course his wife and children have come to South Carolina, where George W. Bush's political fortunes were made, in hopes of vaulting Jeb back into the Republican presidential race. But with poll after poll showing Bush hovering around 10 percent — fighting with John Kasich for fourth place — that looks less and less likely every hour.

So it wasn't surprising that there was a big media turnout at Bush's townhall here in Columbia Thursday. Yes, there's plenty of press to go around now; South Carolina is teeming with reporters. But there is also a Jeb death watch underway. That's especially true after Bush held a downer of a townhall on Wednesday in Summerville in which some audience members bemoaned the condition of his campaign and wanted to know why he can't raise his game against Donald Trump.

"It's all been decided, apparently," Bush said in frustration. "The pundits have already figured it out. We don't have to go vote. I should stop campaigning maybe."

Bush has mentioned that he knows obituaries are being written for his campaign. I talked to one reporter who noted wryly that when Bush made such an obituary comment, at that precise moment, he, the reporter, was in fact working on Bush's campaign obituary.

Bush is asked about it everywhere he goes. Is his campaign running out of money? How high does he have to finish on Saturday to stay in the race? When will he drop out?

"We've been rising in the polls, I feel good about where we are, and I'm going to work hard," Bush told reporters as he emerged from his Jeb! campaign bus at the Metropolitan Convention Center in Columbia.

Without his love affair with illegals, he may have had a better shot at the prize.

Could be the end of the Bush dynasty.

Could have its worst impact on P and his future, rather than Jeb.

Across the aisle, Chelsea seems to have stumbled in her recent outings on the campaign trail. There were some early rumblings about her entering politics as a candidate. After her recent lackluster appearances on the campaign trail, those rumblings seem to have dissipated.

Maybe not Kasich...he could be hanging in for the number 2 job - bargaining chip is that he could maybe carry critical Ohio.

Hang in there Yeb!, at least until after Florida.

My wish also. Split a few more votes away from Rubio.

That algorithm is dicey.

#2 needs to carry either Ohio, Florida, or Texas......AND be a viable contender for the top spot in 8 years.

To me that means either Rubio or Cruz is #2 pick.

Does anyone know what the Bushes did to earn their fortunes?

From the fifties on in, Democratic and Republican politics IS the Bush family business.

Stupidity.

Good people are capable of monumental stupidity and bad judgment.

The Bushes love America. Their hearts are in the right place. Their love for America contrasts dramatically with the hatred the Democrats have for America. The Democrats want to destroy America. They are a fifth column, doing everything they can to destroy the U.S.A. from within.

The Bushes intentions are good. However:

The Road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

"The Bushes are good people who love America "

The bushes may love america. I will not judge their love.

They are decidedly NOT conservative. Pappa Bush fired every conservative who had served in Reagan's administration when he was elected. He replaced them with moderates. The government would have been saturated with conservatives, but for Bush.

Many of those "experienced" moderates were available to GW and Jeb!

The Bushes are good people who love America (in stark contrast to Obama and the rest of the Democrats). It’s a shame they weren’t wiser.

That's debatable. I think history has shown that they're open border globalists and muslim apologists doing the will of the Saudis.

What you say is true.

It was people with good intentions who elected Obama to the Presidency twice. Americans with good intentions wanted the long, horrible racial nightmare that has hung over America to be over--once and for all--and they thought--or hoped--or prayed--that electing him to the Presidency would somehow end the nightmare.

It was people with good intentions who fell for the old trick that anyone who opposed Obama or any of his policies did so because of racism.

It's people with good intentions who flock to the old Marxist Bernie Sanders, buying the old snake-oil that has destroyed every nation that has drunk it and is responsible for a greater holocaust than the Nazi one: communism.

I repeat:

The Road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

I, for one, will answer Jeb's plea and offer my slow and lonely one man clap for the departing, super tall candidate. Good luck in your non-political future, Yeb. I won't miss you, but I certainly don't hate you either.

The clan gathering is because of the gift gun the other day. It's either a family intervention to take it away lest he discover it was a toy gun, just like his toy turtles.

"Put that thing down Jebbie before you put your eye out....please."

Or they want to share the moment the meaning of "forlorn hope" is revealed to the whole family.

No third Bush.

Guess the family will have to settle for a tie with the Adamses.

It’s interesting to me that, several years ago, when I posted comments critical of G. W. Bush here on FB, few people agreed and many deluged me with posts defending him. I had been one of his biggest supporters—even nominated him for Mt. Rushmore—but became disenchanted with him when I realized that he had no intention of closing the Mexican Border or halting illegal immigration. From there I became even more disenchanted.

I became very disenchanted with W on election night 2006, when he congratulated Nancy pelosi and the democrats for winning the congress and he said that now he might finally have a congress willing to work with him on Comprehensive Immigration Control. I was angry with him already for the religion of peace b.s., No Child Left Behind, the expansion of medicare, and his absolute refusal to fight for anything he supposedly believed in such as Entitlement Reform. Those remarks were the last straw.

Well...the truth always becomes clearer with the benefit of hindsight. I fully supported the War in Iraq. I now believe that I was completely wrong in doing so.

I worked for the US Customs and Border Control Dept of Homeland security from 2002-2004 at their HQ in the Ronald Reagan bldg in downtown DC.

At that time we understood that Bush was an open borders guy. His talk about protecting the border was just talk.

Elite opnion at the time was that the USA Canada and Mexico would merge someday to form a superstate in much the same way that the EU did in the 90’s. that the way to go about doing this was to make for a free flow of people and goods.

casualties were just a cost of doing business.
