Donald Trump is a bigger frontrunner to be the Republican nominee than you think
Washington Post ^ | 2-18-16 | Chris Cillizza

Why isn't Trump getting the credit and coverage he deserves? Because, at root, there is still a belief within the party establishment and the ranks of the media that he will somehow implode or voters will "wise up" or "get real" or something.

The question is whether Trump has a ceiling. Trump was never my first, second, or third choice. After going Code Pink and endorsing a blood libel, Trump is dead last. If he’s the nominee, I might have to vote libertarian.

It’s weird the way that Trump and Cruz’supporters numbers seem to track over the last few weeks. They both seem to trend up and down together.

Trump is a winner and will do more for “conservative” values and American ideals than anyone after Theodore Roosevelt or Ronald Reagan.

About a month ago I sent, via Sen. Jeff Sessions but also through our own Trump state coodinator, a memo to the Trump campaign saying “Look, it’s early, but here was Reagan’s schedule in 1980” and showed them that RR was already preparing for the takeover in Feb. 1980 with a budget team.

I gave them all of Reagan’s milestones-—when he appointed Ed Meese, when they had their appointees vetted, etc.

Well, yesterday Trump said he would roll out his policy team next week. I’m wondering if they saw the memo? Rush said today it looked like Trump was running in the general election based on the so-called “meltdown” at the debate, when in fact he was cutting loose the George W. Bush baggage. Rush saw that as strategic, deliberate, and designed to remove all possibility of Cankles or Dinobernie dragging that up in the general.

Yes, we COULD have another Iowa . . . but it is highly, highly unlikely and much more likely that in fact the polls are right, and more important, that the gem I found the other day that Trump is viewed in separate polls as “best able to change Washington” is the fuel driving his campaign.

Moreover, that little gem told me why Cruz was having so much trouble with “conservatives,” “very conservatives,” and “evangelicals.” All the 1,000 establishment politicians he has lined up for endorsements are in fact HURTING him because they psychologically remind people that Cruz is an “insider/part of the establishment.” I am convinced now that Cruz would have been better off not taking a single endorsement (Rubio as well).

Finally, folks, it would not surprise me to see “my-dad-was-a-mailman Kasich” become Trump’s veep. Kasich would solidify Trump’s ability to swing OH, PA, MI, WI, and NJ. I always thought it would be Cruz, that they would kiss and make up. But what could Cruz bring that Trump doesn’t have? Maybe some conservatives and evangelicals-—but Trump is already winning those states.

And I thought this was about electing the best person to close off the border, put Americans back to work, get the globalist donors out of our politics, and so on and so forth...silly me, what was I thinking?

Of course, this is supposed to be about nominating the best conservative so that Hillary could become the first woman pResident.

What was I thinking?

That is very interesting. I think you are right but to be honest I’d rather he pick someone besides Kasich. He could pick someone out of the primary candidates. I actually think Rubio MIGHT bring in Hispanic and Florida.....but who knows. I think you are awesome for sending that to the Trump campaign. And the fact at Trump is listening is really cool. Thank you for sending that to him. It is clear Trump is going to win the nomination and win the Presidency.

Nice comments LS. The only part I might tweak a bit is the V.P. pick.

Traditionally presidential candidates pick a person who can deliver their home state. Trump is doing so well, I’m not sure that’s a necessity for him.

I don’t want him to pick someone who will unravel any improvements he makes. I want someone who agrees with his vision. Kasich doesn’t. Now you may not have been expressing your desire there, so don’t think I meant you were.

I would hope for Sessions at this point. Having said that, does Sessions send such a steadfast Conservative message, that it might cost Trump some of his broad demographic support?

It will be interesting to see who he picks.

At this point, please don’t let it be Ted. Dead is Ted to me.

It will be him, or Scott Walker, for all the reasons you mention...mid west...working class...preserve Social Security etc.

Oh please, nonononono on that VP choice. That one seems like such an apple polisher as well as a mail man’s son. The fact that your msg to DJT might have been addressed gives hope to the AMERICAN people that we have, at this time, someone on our side who really listens to US. Nice to have friends in high places. :-)) Trump’s comment about his announcement of his team next week was heard in his Town Hall event. We anticipate that one!!

Good post and I'm sure that the Trump campaign monitors this site on a regular basis. Wouldn't be surprised if they used the Reagan schedule you sent them. Earlier today, when the Pope story was breaking, I posted about the wall around the Vatican and shortly it was up on Drudge. So maybe Matt still comes here too.

With regard to Iowa, I wish we would get off that narrative that it was a big loss for Trump. It really wasn't. Trump came out of there with 7 delegates to Cruz's 8. A virtual tie and the Cruz "lead" was quickly erased in NH and then some.

Months before the Iowa caucus, I remember Trump being worried that Ben Carson was polling ahead of him there. Iowa was never a "sure thing" for Trump. I think that was probably his toughest hurdle. Those Iowans always like to surprise us and have historically been inclined to reject the frontrunner. But in actuality, a virtual tie in terms of delegates won.

Gotta say that's an interesting way to consider it, but... Howdy Doody?

Heck, at least he was born on American soil and both his mom and his dad were American citizens so he's got something going for him I suppose...

Exactly! Bush was awful after Reagan, we don’t want to do that again. Kasich also brings no charisma, no personality, nothing of interest. Trump has run against the GOP and I’d be disappointed if he chose a pro-amnesty establishment type
