Despite Criticism of Pope, Donald Trump Questioned Rival's Christianity

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump reacted strongly to Pope Francis' criticism of his immigration policies as "not Christian" this afternoon, calling Francis' questioning of his faith "disgraceful."

But today's battle comes after Trump himself has spent days repeatedly questioning the faith of his biggest rival, Ted Cruz.

"I've never seen anybody that lied as much as Ted Cruz," Trump said at a press conference Monday. "And he goes around saying he's a Christian. I don't know, you're going to have to really study that."

At a Tuesday rally in North Augusta, South Carolina, Trump said Cruz "holds up the Bible and then he lies about so many things."

All this followed a tweet from last Friday wondering about Cruz's evangelicalism:

How can Ted Cruz be an Evangelical Christian when he lies so much and is so dishonest?- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 12, 2016

Pope Francis criticized the Republican candidate in a statement Thursday morning at the culmination of his trip to Mexico. Informed of some of the rhetoric Trump has used regarding immigrants and his proposal to build a wall across the U.S.'s southern border, Francis said Trump's actions were "not Christian."

"A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian," Francis said. "This is not in the gospel."

Trump responded moments after the pope's comments were released. "No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man's religion or faith," Trump said in a written statement.

The pope has managed to help Trump control the media and block out other candidates for the last few precious says leading to SC primary.

Southern Baptists hate Catholics. I am a life long Southern Baptist (I don’t agree on the hating Catholics part), and noticed it first as a child in 1960 (Kennedy). Cruz should disqualify himself from commenting on the Pope until and unless he repudiates the Southern Baptist animus toward Catholics.

Oh, yeah, I know Dad. (can I call you Dad?)

I mean Trump was beyond vicious in his attacks on Ben Carson. Not exactly Christian like.

Back before Trump unloaded on him, Carson was leading in Iowa and had pretty good ratings.

Trump utterly destroyed Carson and Carson did not say one word.

Instead he called Cruz out for a honest mistake by Cruz’s people.

And now Carson just loves Donald Trump. Some people think Trump is paying or somehow encouraging Carson to stay in to take votes away from Cruz.

I don’t think that’s out of the question.

Ted’s lies, misrepresentations, big money donors, and status gutter politics have nothing to do with it?

....”Big difference between politicians calling each other names, and the leader of a world religion doing it”......

What World Religion? ......Didn’t know one had yet been appointed????

But if you mean The Pope at the Vatican well he’s always been a political figurehead in the International Community.....everyone of the Popes...... No different than any other International Leader with Political Agendas....just because he calls himself a head of a church denomination doesn’t mean he doesn’t carry a Political agenda first and foremost..............you think he travels the world meeting with dignitaries just to wave incense over their heads????....He bellies up to them all, always has....and they him....he holds a gigantic “Purse”...and influence over all his followers.

As a Catholic, and a Cruzer, I agree.

The Pope needs to shut his trap about all this political crap.

Well, dynoman, Trump is reaching way back in the past to try and discredit our last Republican president.

So the past is okay if the Donald does it?

At least Cruz is posting Donald’s own words and Donald’s own interview, not some theory about 9-11.

I have no idea what you are talking about.

When posting remember to use names and not pronouns and give us an idea of what you are referring to.

Excellent response

too bad most people will only see extracts and misquotes out of context

Trump’s not the only one. The Pope has a wall also. a 50 foot one.

But you Trump people are so trusting.

Trump has said many things in his life in order to close the deal.

Right now, he’s trying to make a deal to be nominated.

He has a bunch of you believing that he is the only one who will build a wall. Why? He’s also the only one who has ALREADY opened the door back in.

Ted Cruz will build a wall but before he does he will make sure we can get the right people on the Mexican side of the wall and also make sure they cannot get back.

Name-callers can repent, too. Anyone can repent if s/he realizes they’ve done wrong.

Has Cruz commented on the Pope?

I haven’t heard anything about that.

I was raised Southern Baptist also. They do not hate Catholics. They did about 80 years ago but they have changed a lot.

Baptists agree with Catholics about abortion, for example, and that is very important to Baptists AND Catholics. And me, by the way.

Trump said the head of a religion shouldn’t question people’s faith. Not that any layman can’t.

Trump said "No leader..." should question someone's faith.

The Pope says Donald Trump is not a Christian

yeah, that will sit well with South Carolinians at the polls this weekend

especially the folks who don’t see the Pope as especially Christian
