Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump reacted strongly to Pope Francis' criticism of his immigration policies as "not Christian" this afternoon, calling Francis' questioning of his faith "disgraceful."
But today's battle comes after Trump himself has spent days repeatedly questioning the faith of his biggest rival, Ted Cruz.
"I've never seen anybody that lied as much as Ted Cruz," Trump said at a press conference Monday. "And he goes around saying he's a Christian. I don't know, you're going to have to really study that."
At a Tuesday rally in North Augusta, South Carolina, Trump said Cruz "holds up the Bible and then he lies about so many things."

All this followed a tweet from last Friday wondering about Cruz's evangelicalism:
How can Ted Cruz be an Evangelical Christian when he lies so much and is so dishonest?- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 12, 2016
Pope Francis criticized the Republican candidate in a statement Thursday morning at the culmination of his trip to Mexico. Informed of some of the rhetoric Trump has used regarding immigrants and his proposal to build a wall across the U.S.'s southern border, Francis said Trump's actions were "not Christian."
"A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian," Francis said. "This is not in the gospel."
Trump responded moments after the pope's comments were released. "No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man's religion or faith," Trump said in a written statement.

I suppose you and Trump consider it lying to replay someone's past statements.
And no, I don't care for Beck either.
You could read it that way. I don’t believe that is in the spirit of what he meant to convey. It was most likely referencing leaders of state, people like obama. But we are all free to interpret his words however we choose.
Yes. Fox’s Carl Cameron started on this immediately.
I agree he probably was referring to heads of state, but lets not forget he is running to be a head of state. Therefore shouldn’t his words mean the same for him as well?
“I suppose you and Trump consider it lying to replay someone’s past statements.”
When it’s deliberate misrepresentation, yes I do.
It’s dirty status quo politics. Just like what he did in IA. Is that what you expected “the only principled candidate” in the race to be doing?? I sure didn’t. I bought Ted’s book “A Time For Truth”. What a farce he’s turned out to be. I’ll vote for him as the nominee but it will be a default “cream of the crap vote for me”.
Again, the unbelievers and Catholics have a built-in hatred for Cruz simply because he is an evangelical. I know, because I was one of those Catholics before the Holy Spirit redeemed me. I’ve told this story on Free Republic before, but a few years ago when TCU joined the Big 12-2, a person in my work area who is a KU graduate and a Catholic said (and I quote), “we don’t need those G—d D—m Christians joining the conference. True story, and I was floored when I heard him say that. Catholics have a major disdain for evangelicals.
Big difference between politicians calling each other names, and the leader of a world religion doing it...
I am really mad at the Pope. Not because he jumped on Trump ... but why didn’t he jump on Cruz. Cruz wants to build a wall also.
Yep, Cruz is thinking, “What am I, chopped liver?”
Go Trump!
Judging by the things he says (never read any of his writings, never will) he contradicts himself, not to mention Church doctrine. So he’s either not very intelligent or he doesn’t think anyone will call him out on that.
Call me old fashioned, but popes shouldnt attack people so directly. This man is no good for the Church. Certainly no good for American Catholicsm. But I doubt he cares. He’s got a job to do...
I’m saving my hate for Muslims.
I don’t really like my church either (LOL). I’m an Episcopalian ...all my life. I’ve disliked my church ever since we elected that horrible woman for presiding Bishop and that nauseating gay Bishop.
But the first 38 years were good and I still go there but the Church by the Sea in Maui does not do politics.
What’s a peader.
We need to open our eyes to this horrible man before we go too far in the primaries.
A lot of eyes are opening but too many are glued shut.
And the Pope knows it. In other words, the Pope knows that Cruz won't build a wall, despite Cruz saying in one or more debates, parroting Trump, that he would build a wall.
Only Trump Will Build A Wall, the Pope Agrees
I do hate that. I am so mad at the Pope I could spit.
Why couldn’t he have lashed out at Ted Cruz. Ted wants a wall too and Ted doesn’t want a revolving door.
Fortunately, Trump lost some of his mojo by lashing back at the Pope. Not smart.
Only Trump Will Build A Wall, the Pope Agrees
Really? Who are you to judge?
You, and anyone else, have a right to judge him as you like. So does the Pope IMO. He shouldn’t. He lowers himself in stature when he does such things.
What did Trump do to deserve the wrath of both Obama and Pope Francis in the same week? I know you hate him, but do you really believe that Obama and the Pope are in the right and Trump is in the wrong on immigration?
