What strikes me about that minimum age of 35 is that back in 1776, 35 years of age was considered quite mature, stately, compared to today.

Quite right.
Just to put things in perspective, Hillary is so old that Chelsea (Chelsea!) is 35.
She's eligible to run for President.

Supposedly the average life expectancy in 1776 was 35. Hard to believe. I guess they expected presidential candidates to come from families that had the resources to live beyond the average.
