Ted Cruz has inched ahead of Donald Trump in a new national poll released Wednesday.
The Texas senator has the backing of 28% of Republican voters nationwide, unseating Trump, who won the support of 26% in the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. But Cruz's 2-point edge is within the poll's margin of error.
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio comes in third with 17% support, followed by Ohio Gov. John Kasich at 11%, Ben Carson at 10% and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush in last place with 4%.
The results are a major change from last month's NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, when Trump held a 13-point lead over Cruz, 33% to 20%.
The latest survey was conducted by Republican pollster Bill McInturff and Democratic pollster Peter Hart after Saturday's GOP debate in South Carolina....

Yup. Limbaugh had to backtrack today on that BS Jeb poll but he has new red meat now.
Trump is running away with this, so something had to be put out there to keep things interesting
No surprise that you fail to comprehended the difference between being the provocateur and people responding to your provocation
Nikki and trey are popular establishment politicians in south carolina. Them backing rubio should provide him with a good jump. This is the establishments chance to gain some ground.
No, he'll just remind everybody of the other polls showing him way ahead.
Woo hoo. Hoping this would happen before it was too late.
Lots of making fun of this poll.
Trump supporters only like polls that favor Trump.
Overall, I think Cruz is closer to Trump than what the consensus polls are showing though.
This is only ONE of the things that scares me about Trump.
That he would lose to Hillary.
The other thing is the harm he could do on the Supreme Court.
I don’t trust him to appoint true conservatives.
The Trumpsters avoid handling the truth by ignoring it or denying it.
Yes little johnnie, I get that your feelings are hurt and always will be hurt.
You have been here too long to make that generalization, as we’ve torn apart small sample some zed polls for all the years I’ve been here.
Victim status much?
You know if stuff didn’t matter a Trump presidency could be fun.
Watching Trumpertantrums every day. Seeing who he will sue next. Reading his tweets ... do not think he would stop tweeting just because he was Prez ...
The only problem is ... stuff matters.
There is a group of about 10% of voters who are firmly independent( http://www.gallup.com/poll/15370/Party-Affiliation.aspx )
Whoever the Republican nominee is, they must win over 50% of the independent voters in order to beat the Democrat nominee.
Trump has very high unfavorables, especially among independents, which is why Cruz barely beats Clinton in the match-up polls while Trump loses.
It’s simple math.
You don’t say where that is from.
He needs to prove what he can do to Hernie Clanders by doing it first to Trump. And Trump is an easy target, given that he is a buffoon given to high jackassery when confronted on almost anything.
“If Trump ever does start falling behind in polls regularly - He will hire his own poll done, and make Mexico pay for it !”
Congrats! Now, that’s a funny post ... I laughed out loud.
It was sourced on twitter, it’s legit.
I agree. It would also be fun to watch all the tRump supporters heads explode when they realized just how stupid they were.
