A few months ago I wrote that Donald Trump was probably going to withdraw before the Iowa caucuses rather than face the embarrassment of defeat. Wrong. He did lose Iowa, seemed momentarily humbled, but then quickly reverted to form by asserting that he really won. He went on to a landslide victory in New Hampshire and now leads in South Carolina.
While much of the political world speculates that Trump may be creating a new kind of candidacy largely immune to normal attacks, let me make another assertion (that may prove as wrong as the previous): Donald Trump should be easy to defeat. What makes him not a ânormalâ candidate actually makes him more vulnerable rather than stronger. Let me explain.
In a Republican primary, Trump lacks both an ideological or geographic base. For all the focus on his bigoted remarks about Mexicans and Muslims, Trump has won self-identified moderate voters in both Iowa and New Hampshire. In Iowa, he lost conservatives and very conservatives but won them in NH (in a landslide victory like he had in NH, itâs hard to win everything.) In a party that is increasingly dominated by the South and Sunbelt, Trump lives on Fifth Avenue.

Trump is basically a Scoop Jackson Democrat, taking over the dead and decaying husk of the Republican party. And eminently electable. Deal with it.
I don’t think it will matter - Trump can be his own worst enemy.
The way I heard it, Mexico was gonna pay for it. Someone’s lying again.

You also misunderstand. If Cruz flames out, I will be with whomever remains on the right who isn’t your lifetime lefty proto-fascist wannabe. I’m not so much for Cruz as I am totally against your poseur and what he actually represents, (as opposed to what he merely pays lips service to).
I don’t find that hard to believe at all.

America needs a nationalist right now. We’ve lost our identity and the last two administrations have globalized us into ruin.
Are you voting third party if Trump gets the nomination?
Except a truther in the Obama regime would have found them by now..
My ultimate fall back plan will be to vote for the Libertarian candidate. There are no circumstances under which I will ever vote for Trump.

the daily beast is a refugee center for failed journalists. their publications in various stages of failure or downsizing culled the dead wood
We're trying to save a country here. Conservatism as defined by most people today is just a different form of bigger government.

Good for you! Stay strong. Stick with your principles, FRiend!
Well, then I suggest "Conservatives" get ready for Hitlery, because that is exactly what'll happen when "Conservatives" jump ship and fail to vote Trump. Likewise, put up anyone BUT Trump, and we'll be facing Hitlery again. It's just that simple. Get it right this time, because the very future of the Republic depends on it.
Lol. Sat night and Sunday morning ought to be interesting.
I'm betting it's a national blowout. Predictions are a dime a dozen, and mine is as good as yours.
Meanwhile, Cruz has no potatoes, and no onions.
And you're going to tell us, over and over, all the way to Election Day.
Lucky us.
No, but that chorus is only going to get louder from others. Not nearly enough people out there are down for your sickness.
I feel no compulsion to support the nominee of the Republican Party if I think that candidate is a wreck. I am no longer a registered Republican. It’s the candidates job to earn my vote, not mine to hold my nose yet again. I will assess the field at the time of the General Election and make my decision then.
