Tell me this. Why was Ted Cruz’s dad living and working in Canada during the high of the VN war when little Teddy was born. Was he afraid that if he lived here in the states that he might be drafted? And BTW, I am also a VN era veteran and DT deferment does not bother me in the least.
It is my understanding (perhaps incorrect) that those who received political asylum from the US did not participate in the draft. They could volunteer if they wanted, but were not compelled to serve.
Do the math. He'd have been almost 30 years old.

Not defending Rafael, but Rafael wasn’t a US citizen at that time? Were non citizens
being drafted? Took him until 2005 to decide he needed US citizenship. Wonder if Edward
was hinting about running for President at that time and maybe suggested that papa become a citizen.
Also remember that papa Cruz was divorced with 2 children at that time in his life.
I don’t remember the details of males, support and the draft.
