Hey, Wildcat! Some of us were inside the intelligence community at the time and in the aftermath. George W. Bush came into office with the idea of getting Saddam because he tried to kill George H.W. Bush. While it might be more accurate to say the Bush administration “contrived” the presence of WMD, it is simpler to say Bush Lied about the presence of WMD.

I have never heard one convincing argument as to what would compel Bush (or Blair) to lie about anything, or why they would desperately want to get into a war with Saddam for reasons other than what they said. And no, revenge for Saddam trying to assassinate Bush 1 is not a reasonable explanation.

At the time, there seemed to be a clear case for going to Afghanistan and trying to get bin Laden. I had always thought that the reasons for invading Iraq were tenuous at best. In retrospect, it is clear that it had been a colossal mistake, costing too many American lives and money we couldn’t afford. While Obama sabotaged what small success there was, we should have stayed out in the first place.

It wasn’t just US and England. Italian, German - every intel agency around the world said he had WMD. He used WMD against his own people. When the Marines invaded they found every Iraqi military base had protective equipment for their military. It was reported several times by several sources of the existence of aerial photos showing convoys taking material from Iraq to Syria reportedly WMD. If Bush lied, so did all the civilized world.

The invasion of Iraq was a brilliant tactical maneuver. It placed the US on both sides of Iran when Iran was trying its best to change Afghanistan and Iraq into an area with which the US had no control. It would have worked except for the election and capitulation of Obama.

With some guys it may just be an ego thing. It probably irked them no end when Saddam would thumb his nose at them after they roughed him up in the Gulf War.

After you pummel somebody, they're supposed to stay down. To do otherwise is a challenge that must be put down in even stronger terms.
