Justice Antonin Scalia once said that the only thing not for sale was character - and character he had. His robust defence of religious liberty, his skewering of secular fundamentalists, his courageous refusal to back down even as the cultural tides turned against him - these will be missed. And so will he.

Beautiful words.

God's timing in calling this devoted servant home arouses a sense of bewilderment and wonder.

In the history of civilization, those revolutionary ideas and the resulting written Constitution Scalia devoted his life to studying, contemplating, articulating and defending are at great risk in the nation and world today.

Who is there now to lead in rediscovering them, in shining their light in all the dark places where tyranny lurks, and in leading America back to the principles Thomas Jefferson, in his Inaugural Address summarized and declared:

"These principles form the bright constellation which has gone before us and guided our steps through an age of revolution and reformation. The wisdom of our sages and blood of our heroes have been devoted to their attainment. They should be the creed of our political faith, the text of civic instruction, the touchstone by which to try the services of those we trust; and should we wander from them in moments of error or of alarm, let us hasten to retrace our steps and to regain the road which alone leads to peace, liberty, and safety." - Thomas Jefferson, First Inauaugral
