Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump defended federal funding to Planned Parenthood during Saturday night's presidential debate in South Carolina and also did not back away from his past support of impeaching former President George W. Bush.
At times during the debate, the discussion led to very heated back-and-forth exchanges between candidates, most of which involved the billionaire real estate mogul who currently leads by wide margins in most South Carolina Republican nomination polls.
After Trump used former President Ronald Reagan to defend himself as "flexible" for changing his mind on certain issues like abortion and his views on Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz chimed in by suggesting that Trump has been too flexible on things that should be "core principles" for conservatives and pro-lifers.
...
Trump then challenged Cruz to explain where he had ever said he supported Planned Parenthood.
"You supported it when [Congress was] battling over defunding Planned Parenthood," Cruz responded. "You went on television and said, 'Planned Parenthood does wonderful things and we should not defund them.'"
Trump responded by saying, "It does do wonderful things but not as it relates to abortion."

“While Planned Parenthood is engaging in the despicable practice of abortion - in addition to then selling aborted baby body parts to the highest bidder - the organization should receive no taxpayer dollars. The liberal left wing always claims that Planned Parenthood isn’t about abortion and that it’s about other general areas of women’s health. I am totally in favor of women’s health and if they can put their money where their mouth is, and stop the abortion services at Planned Parenthood entirely, we can talk about government funding for many of the other aspects of the organization that do a lot of good.” — Donald J. Trump
Except for abortion.
Don’t let the truth get in the way though.
The proof is in the recent budget continuation resolution that passed both GOP led houses.
Note to Ericsson and Cruz, your party loves abortion and the selling of baby parts. Trump has nothing to do with it.
These Christian organizations are going to lose the election for Cruz. They pounce on anything they think can sink Trump making headlines out of nothing.
Trump has said repeatedly since the beginning of the race that Planned Parenthood does some great things for women and they do, cancer screenings, diagnosing and treating std’s and other things.
He has also said he would defund anyway based on abortion alone.
Fine, if Abortion is no longer federally funded, than I could care less what P P does.
[Moderator] STRASSEL To Trump:
You have made a lot of promises and you have also - you’re the only candidate who has said he would not touch entitlements.
The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget has estimated that your ideas would cost an additional $12 trillion to $15 trillion over the next 10 years and that we would have to have annual economic growth of anywhere from 7.7 percent to 9 percent annually to pay for them.
I said it on the debate thread, but it’s worth saying again -
Trump’s remarks about Planned Parenthood are the moral equivalence (for me) of claiming we should keep on a pedophile teacher because he does a good job with his 3rd period English Lit class. Planned Parenthood is about abortion - period.
That was a bizarre performance.
Your post is spot on.
The GOPe & Conservatives in Congress are the ones who provided the budget funding for Planned Parenthood. Some people like the talk even though it is not back up with action. Suckers.
Actually, this is not what he said or did or supports now.
Disinformation dissemination.
Why can’t he say it correctly himself in plain english then? Why does he say something different when you watch it for yourself? Why do we have so many people here on FR who have to translate for him?
I rewound that exchange a few times (Tivo) and my analogy above still represents my perception of what he said about Planned Parenthood.
I will vote for the person who stands the best chance of beating Hillary, Bernie, or the next great hope of the DNC in the general election, but Trump’s statement last night gave me indigestion.
partial-birth abortion should remain legal. We're not talking about a zygote here. We're talking about a baby, and Trump's position was pro-infanticide. And Trumpeters pretend to believe that a guy who was cool with murdering babies is now against abortion, when this alleged conversion coincided with this election. But you don't really believe it. You Trumpsters know that Trump is for murdering babies, but you're willing to sacrifice those babies, because the rush of emotion you feel when Trump insults those who have hurt your feelings is a more important value to you.
The proof is in the recent budget continuation resolution that passed both GOP led houses.
Watching Trump in the debates sometimes make we wonder: “Who let the democrat in?”
They call themselves Christian and print a half-truth? That isn’t Christian at all.
“The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget has estimated that your ideas would cost an additional $12 trillion to $15 trillion over the next 10 years”
Well gosh. If The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget says it, and Strassel endorses it, then I guess we all need to accept it as gospel. /s
“” She [Maya MacGuineas, President of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget] has signed up Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles, currently the two biggest celebrities in corporate America, as her “co-founders,” and stacked her steering committee with well-connected bigwigs, like Steve Rattner, the private-equity magnate and former Obama auto czar, and JP Morgan Vice Chairman Jimmy Lee.”
