Following death of Supreme Court Justice Scalia, here's President Obama's short list for replacement

After the sudden death of conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, President Obama has the opportunity to move the country’s highest court toward the left by tapping a more liberal-leaning successor.

Immediately after news of Scalia's death broke, diverse options for the top job were being floated along with a debate online among Senate leaders about whether lame duck Obama should be the one to nominate the next justice.

"The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court justice," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Saturday in a statement.

"Therefore this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president.”

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) quickly fired back saying that "it would be unprecedented in recent history for the Supreme Court to go a year with a vacant seat."

"Failing to fill this vacancy would be a shameful abdication of one of the Senate's most essential Constitutional responsibilities."

Legal experts think Republicans might block an Obama appointee until he's out of office, leaving the court with a gaping vacant seat for nearly a year.

"I think Republicans will make every effort to block the nomination," Stephen Wermiel, Professor of Law at American University Washington College of Law told the Daily News. "Even to the point of shedding blood in the aisles of the Senate if they have to."

By the way wasn't Holder held in contempt of congress?

He sure was, but the Obama administration personnel are above the law...

Application of the law are only for conservatives and the little people...

No disagreement here. I just don't want a sleeper liberal nominated. We basically got that with Souter and Roberts. Scalia was the last unapologetic defender of the Constitution on the Court. The rest are either wishy-washy or outright foes. We won't get another Scalia unless we win the WH this Fall, and I'm not too confident about that, or of someone like Trump (although he's okay on other issues) nominating a strict constructionist.

And on the latter point, this may turn things upside down for a lot of Trump supporters. It was possible to look the other way on his various pronouncements and flip-flops as long as we had a reasonable chance of maintaining a 5-4 edge on the USSC. But putting that margin into the hands of a somewhat unknown quantity like DJT may cause some second thoughts. Trouble is, the way things are going, it may end up a choice between Don and the Shrill One, and naming a Justice to the SC is a nightmare scenario with Hillary, and a roll of the dice with DJT.

War breaks out by August. All of our many enemies have our grid as target #1. There is no need to fire missiles at our cities, cut the power, they’ll explode on their own.

If the power goes out, odds are we’ll never know what really happened. Who will tell us, after the screens go black?

No electricity, no elections, emergency law, eternal Obama.

Those few sentences are the scariest things you have ever written. And you have written some very scary stuff.

Thing is, I think you are right.

VJ will appoint whomever she wishes. The Seante blackmail files will be dropped onto the committee table, and the feckless pubbies will do as they are told, just as the pirate Roberts did in the scotus.

Well, for one, the individual that has properly stored a solar system, batteries, and a very high efficiency small freezer.
