After the sudden death of conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, President Obama has the opportunity to move the countryâs highest court toward the left by tapping a more liberal-leaning successor.
Immediately after news of Scalia's death broke, diverse options for the top job were being floated along with a debate online among Senate leaders about whether lame duck Obama should be the one to nominate the next justice.
"The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court justice," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Saturday in a statement.
"Therefore this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president.â
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) quickly fired back saying that "it would be unprecedented in recent history for the Supreme Court to go a year with a vacant seat."
"Failing to fill this vacancy would be a shameful abdication of one of the Senate's most essential Constitutional responsibilities."
Legal experts think Republicans might block an Obama appointee until he's out of office, leaving the court with a gaping vacant seat for nearly a year.
"I think Republicans will make every effort to block the nomination," Stephen Wermiel, Professor of Law at American University Washington College of Law told the Daily News. "Even to the point of shedding blood in the aisles of the Senate if they have to."

The short list is:
Sri Srinivasan Paul Watford David Baron Merrick Garland Loretta Lynch Patricia Ann Millett
I see him adding Hillary Rodham Clinton to that list if she ends up being indicted.
I think he’ll nominate either a muslim or a Mexican immigrant.
He knows that there is no hope of Hillary being approved. I’m betting on the Kansan from India. Since he got unanimous consent in his rise to the DC Circuit it will be politically difficult for the Senate to refuse this to him.
The selection will be horrible to us, but I expect Mitch McC to come aboard the liberal bandwagon once more. The people of KY make very poor choices overall.
I agree with all of those picks except Loretta Lynch. I don’t think Obama will chose her.
Don't think so...Holder has way too much baggage...
I'm positive Obama doesn't want a rehash of Fast and Furious debacle out in the public again during the confirmation hearings ...
Gunrunning to Mexican cartels to push an anti second amendment political agenda in America, add a dead border patrol agent too boot...
Yeah, that will fly...
I vote for Judge Judy.
consensus, moderate, bipartisan = radical Leftist
Whoever it is I guarantee it will be disasterous if the republicans fold and allow it to go through.
She is already on the USSC.
Can he nominate himself?
I think you’re right about Holder. He’s got too much visibility. Watch for a stealth candidate, someone who will look okay to both sides, but once in will slide over to the liberal side when important issues (abortion, 2nd amendment, etc.) come up. The sign will be when the ‘Pubs start making statements that effectively say, “this one is okay, about the best we can hope for from Obama”. Then the vote will be something like 99-0 in favor, and the Constitution as we know it gets flushed.
L4B already had five votes on the bench, before murdering Scalia. The taking out of Scalia and replacing him with a leftist is designed to give Roberts cover hereafter AND control the balance of bench power for the next sixteen years.
Just remember Laz, that the demogogs only have to buy off a few of the lowest haning fruits in the Republican party. It won’t be a lift that we taxpayers haven’t already born the brunt of numerous times.
I think it will someone openly gay.
Yes, unfortunately. What Bathhouse Barry really wants is to be Secretary General of the UN...O Taint.
It is to cry,
