So on the one hand you believe the Bushes are weak compassionate conservatives, and on the other hand you believe they have an urge for retribution for a failed assassination attempt that would lead them to waste thousands of lives and $trillions on a petty vendetta?

I think that assassination attempt predisposed him to taking out Saddam Hussein. Yes.
I think that’s rational.
I also think Saudi Arabia feared Saddam and thought with the US in charge of Afghanistan and the US in charge of Iraq, that the US would have Iran sandwiched, not counting control of the Persian Gulf.
