Free Trade is a major tenet of conservatism. Cruz changed his position after back room dealing by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Democrats — namely over an issue dealing with the Export-Import Bank. The bill was changed to not allow Ex-Im Bank to expire. Reading it and keeping up with revisions are different things. Cruz (or at least his friend Sessions) managed to keep an eye on the bill revisions and back room dealings.

LOL In a word - bunk. The USA was founded on protectionism and rose to preeminence industrially because of it. The primary reason for the Revolutionary War was because of British mercantilism towards the colonies. I would consider our founding father way more conservative than anyone alive today.

Free Enterprise in our own country is a major tenant of Conservatism. Free Trade with other countries regardless of whether they are an equal trading partner is a relatively new tenant that has crept into conservatism and needs to be excised. The GOP used to be known as the Grand Ol Protectionest party. And the founding fathers put in high import tariffs that served our country well for 180 years.

Milton Friedman should be dug up from the grave and shot for his role in destroying our economy.

And Cruz doesn’t need to be anywhere near the whitehouse until he develops a better understanding of economics.
