Steyn: The March of Trump, and the Feel of Bern
Steyn Online ^ | February 10, 2016 | Mark Steyn

Posted on 02/10/2016 2:48:40 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

As I was saying at the dawn of this day:

1) Trump;
2) Kasich;
3) Rubio;
4) Bush;
5) Cruz.

Number One and Two were correct, and at this hour Numbers Three, Four and Five are all jostling together at 11 per cent, but with Cruz third and Rubio fifth. On the Democrat side I noted the midnight vote tallies from Dixville Notch, Hart's Location and Millsfield:

Sanders 17
Clinton 9

[snipped text about Dem race]

On the Republican side, Trump won yuge: 35 per cent in a nine-man race, and more than twice as many votes as the second-placed Kasich. On the latter, I wrote three weeks ago:

>>>On the "moderate" side of the GOP, the thinking since debate season began is that Rubio is the alternative to Bush, and Christie is the alternative to Rubio. But it could be that Kasich is the alternative to all three of them.<<<

And so it proved. Good for Kasich. But a nightmare for the GOP's Donor-Industrial Complex: Trump has the populist lane, Cruz the conservative, and both are reviled by the so-called "establishment". All New Hampshire had to do was sort out the so-called "moderate" lane by anointing Rubio, and, in a three-way race, he'd eliminate the Trump-Cruz problem. That was the theory.

Instead, Chris Christie's kamikaze mission took out Rubio, and killed his Iowa Rubementum stone dead. As a result, Kasich had a solid second-place finish and Jeb had a marginally less worse than expected fourth-place finish that will keep him and his SuperPac in the game a few states longer. And, until the mod squad consolidates behind one of these guys, the GOP establishment will be stuck with a frontrunner it despises, and a runner-up it despises even more.

Yes, he’ll be out by November 15 (2015).

Imagine an overweight Kamikaze pilot with a big toothy grin—great possibilities for graphics of Christie there.

Steyn is always good.

I think Cruz is perhaps a "stealth insider." The uniparty can afford to have a few on the fringes at both ends, in the House and Senate. Much tougher to allow that person to ascend to the presidency, so certainly, on its face, Cruz is unacceptable to the crony-establishment.

I also think that elevating Cruz to the presidency is something the GOPe would, if it wanted to, have a tough time doing. Not enough of the public will accept him.

I recall Laura Ingraham saying, months ago, keep an eye on Bush. I think that still holds. Somebody will be last man standing against Trump.

-- With negative approval ratings as high as he has, this presents a significant problem for him. --

Indeed, it does. Hillary has huge negatives too.

I think Trump can change the field in that regard. He would look different if his target was only a DEM opponent.

“Sanders isn’t Jewish...he is a communist.”

He SERIOUSLY sounded like the Peron’s in Argentina last night.

In any case, Sanders will simply NOT BE ALLOWED TO WIN. I doubt we make it through tomorrow without some serious talk of Biden, Gore, Romney, or some other Democrat saying they are looking to run.

The money-people are on the verge of losing control of the Republican Party (thank you, Trump) - they are not about to also lose control of the Democrat Party. They need SOMEONE they can ‘trust’ in office to protect their billions.

I think Cruz is perhaps a "stealth insider."

That is a thought provoking statement, as it goes against the conventional wisdom. Yet, there seems to be more and information that would support such a theory.

We'll have to see how this plays out. That Cruz was on the Republican Senatorial Committee in early 2014 so soon after the Fall, 2013 shutdown, tends to strengthen such a contention.

it must be noted that Cruz is Texan and NH is yankee

in addition to the political differences, Texans get stuck in Yankee craws.

The problem with America are largely those of North East Yankees

Seriously wrong. He has been polling at times in Reuters in mid 40s-—with MOE already at majority status in an 11man field. Unheard of.

It BROADENS in a general election. Trump will crush Cankles because he’ll destroy her with the bimbo/criminal stuff, and he rips Dinobernie’s biggest tool with middle class-—trade and illegals. No, Trump ZIS the majority.

It’s Cruz who is stuck in the narrow Goldwater lane.

Trump has no chance. None. Too many people in the base will NOT vote for him. Period. If he loses 30% or 40% of the GOP base, all of the independents in the country won't carry him to victory.

In addition, if Trump wins Bloomberg will jump in and as a center left candidate, be seen as the most conservative choice by many (i.e., someone who was a left of center, pro choice, anti gun, pro tax democrat 18 months ago is still considered a liberal by many, despite his 180 degree flip). The hard core lefties will rally around the hildabeast or commie bern regardless, and win.

We have to remember that the real leadership of the GOPe is the DC Uni-Party which is the DNC. “Rinse-Repeat” takes his marching orders from them.

If it were otherwise, FAUX NEWS would never had left Megan-the-Whore in as moderator. That trick works only once.

It was pleasant to see her bleeding from various orafaces last night as Trump mopped the floor.

If you’re right about Trump’s ceiling, then we can expect the rest of the vote to coalesce with the last guy standing, who isn’t Trump. But if that turns out to be Cruz, then all bet’s are off on the GOPe. They pull out all of the stops for the candidate they think they can buy and control, in which case Trump’s ceiling disappears, at least for the primary.

Chris Christie has emerged as our new Luca Brasi. Shame if we can’t keep him around and sic him on Kasich if he continues to be uppity. Honestly, Christie’s Rubio hit was classic - when Rubio responded to the canned response accusation by repeating the same canned response, Christie’s gobsmacked face was priceless.

If Trump can’t win it’s over because no one else can draw out more voters and Reagan dems even blacks and hispanics, anyone else will loose like Romney.
