May 27, 1968. Ponce De Leon Avenue induction center, Atlanta, Georgia. It was “Count off! 1-2-3-4”.
When it was finished, “Congratulations! All you number 4s are Marines!”
Mine was at 970 Broad Street, Newark, NJ AFEES center.
Same thing was announced, except it was from the two Marines who stepped into the huge assembly area in their dress blues.
It was interesting in that the enlistees were told to step out. There were about 350 men there and about 30 stepped out. The group was laughing at us saying they were in for 2 and we were in for at least 3 years. When the Marines stepped in, all joking stopped because everyone realized this was serious now. All the Army guys went to Fort Dix. The drafted Marines went to Paris Island. I was assigned to an all enlistee training company. No idea where the others went.
