While on the one hand Cruz’s plan hews to Republican orthodoxy in its large tax cuts for the wealthy

This is where I stopped reading. 'Tax the wealthy' is a BS term that liberals use. There is no tax on existing wealth. It is the creation of wealth that is taxed.

It is amazing how often Trump supporters pull out the DNC talking points to slam Cruz.

This thread is delusional.

Cruz does not advocate a VAT in any way.

A proposal as comprehensive as what is being proposed will need to be examined so NO GROUP of Americans is harmed, and ALL GROUPS of Americans benefit. Simplifying the tax code, lowering the rates, and eliminating the payroll tax to restore incentive to work for the lower middle class are vital. But, fairness is important. I myself share this particular concern (I have some some other concerns as well). This particular concern can be addressed by an increase in the S.S. monthly payments so as to offset the VAT or sales tax-like aspect of the proposal. (This fix is really that simple!) Working people will get a huge increase in their take-home pay because of the elimination of payroll taxes. This will more than make-up for the VAT aspect of the proposal. But, those receiving S.S. benefits won’t have this off-set. Going through the proposal step by step in such manner might require an adjustment in the rates so as to not blow a hole in the deficit, but fairness has to be a very big priority has to be as high a priority as tax simplification, lowering the rates, restoring the incentive to work, balancing the budget and ensuring the solvency of S.S. and Medicare. We can and must do all these things without hurting any group of us.

The primary impact of replacing the income tax with a VAT-style sales tax is to capture all the underground and illegal income.

Characterizing it as ‘taxing Grandma’ is nothing but class warfare (consider the source here) and while there is a challenge with respect to retirees, I’m sure it can be worked through.

I’m in the Trump camp, and I like his plan, but this is one area where I like the Forbes/Cruz plan better.

Always, always, always consider the source.

I know you’re aware of this.

In this case, the source is an enemy of Liberty, the Constitution, and our traditional, conservative principles.

When people like this rail against Ted Cruz, it helps us identify and confirm our resolve to support the best candidate in the race.

Look at the list of those who hate Cruz and ask yourself, “Why would these people be so opposed to Cruz?” If the answer doesn’t come to mind immediately, ask yourself a second time.

When the flak is greatest, you’re over the target.

We can learn something here, if (and only if) we are thinking it through.

So, thanks for posting this pro-Cruz article.

The regressive value-added tax is the main reason someone I know would never vote for Cruz. (He has other reasons too.) It might be hard to explain this to low-income people. It’s not a big, juicy, visible issue.

"...Once a VAT is in place, Congress could easily increase the VAT any time it wants more taxpayer money to pay for new programs. Continually increasing the size of government would become considerably less painful because small increases in the VAT rate could raise substantial sums of revenue. An increase of just 1 percent would raise more than $80 billion per year by the end of the decade. The ability of the VAT to raise money will almost certainly prove irresistible to Members of Congress. The experience of other industrialized countries bears this out. As Table 1 shows, 29 of the 30 countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development have implemented VATs..."

This hated writer, whoever he is - if I don’t like them, I don’t read them - is right; a VAT tax will have the effect of making everything retired senior citizens buy cost 10% more on the face of it - any fool can see that. What don’t you understand about a “fixed income”? And we can hardly afford to eat now.

And please, I don’t want any young snot to tell me SS is welfare, not after I paid for it for 40 years under threat of prison if I didn’t. No, I’m not going to go out and get a job (as if there are any) at the age of 75 and half blind. I did my time.

If I wasn’t already thoroughly disgusted with Cruz because of his chicanery, I would be now. Don’t know what other comments are - I’ve learned to get off these threads where it seems younger people end up denigrating and insulting their grandparents. NO VAT!
