Hillary Clinton had a chance to put to rest swirling questions about her paid speeches to groups such as Goldman Sachs during last week's final debate before Tuesday's primary in New Hampshire. She pointedly refused to take it.

But why did Clinton respond that way?
There's the possibility - though I think it's very remote - that Clinton simply wasn't expecting the question and didn't want to commit to anything in the moment.

Why not release them, then? ...
My guess is that in the speeches, Clinton acknowledges her various friends and acquaintances at Goldman Sachs (and other Wall Street firms) and praises them for the work they are doing. "You guys get a bad rap but ..."
Yes, it's standard-issue small talk. But it could look really, really bad in the context of the campaign. Imagine a transcript of Clinton speaking to some big bank or investment firm, thanking a litany of people she's "been friends with forever" and praising the broader enterprise for "all you do."

You don’t think she was offering trades on classified info? Because that’s what she did with health care stocks while she was running the task force — holding various items either LONG or SHORT to make money depending on what she and her task force buddies were up to!!!! Ask poor Vince Foster, who was SUPPOSED to put all that in a blind trust.....ha hah hahaha
Oh believe me, if Martha Stewart can go to jail for insider trading, so can she and her little GS friends. Because that’s what she was being paid for — insider tips. and the “Fees” were just a tiny amount of the money that changed hands....
Her stock dealings were certainly in force but were probably small potatoes in comparison to the payments for senatorial votes and Secretary of State favors.
Thank you for posting this thread Liz. Your work here is superb as always and reminds me of another very astute fr poster from years ago, MiaT.
They should hammer her on this like slimy reid did with Romneys tax returns.
I saw a headline somewhere saying she is going to release them. She probably knows they will get leaked. Maybe she’s going to do a partial release of the least harmful stuff.
Hard to look like a champion of the poor when you are sucking up to the big boys.
She said when EVERYBODY releases their speaking fees she’ll release hers. George should have said “Everybody isn’t running for president.” But, he works for her so....
George Stephanopoulos [pic in post #20] had Anderson Cooper over to his dorm room at Columbia University many times back in 1992 and it was there that George really sucked up to Cooper to keep him from reporting on Hillary Clintons' Watergate investigations.
They are full of umm’s and ah’s and many pauses.
Probably because they sound like the Cruz filibuster in the Senate.
Goldman Sachs stock dealings are the biggies, yes, based on her info, some of which was TOP SECRET, etc.
bump
Good post, good info.
