Ted Cruz sounded despondent at the possibility that same-sex marriage could become legal when he called into the radio show of Tony Perkins, a vehement opponent of gay rights, in February 2014. "Our heart weeps for the damage to traditional marriage that has been done," Mr. Cruz said, urging conservatives to pray but also to fight back. "Be as wise as serpents and gentle as doves," he said, quoting Scripture.
But seven months later, when Mr. Cruz visited the Midtown Manhattan office of a major Republican supporter of same-sex marriage, he sounded almost indifferent: If New York politicians wanted to legalize it, that was their business, he told Paul Singer, the billionaire investor who had bankrolled efforts to strike down laws forbidding same-sex marriage across the country. There was no reason the issue had to drive a wedge between the two men, the Texas senator said, according to a person briefed on the meeting who supports one of Mr. Cruz's opponents.
Mr. Cruz would hardly be the only person to modulate his most provocative language when speaking to people whose support he is courting. But Mr. Cruz, the winner of the Iowa caucuses, has worked harder than any Republican running for president to portray himself as the true and pure conservative and to impugn his rivals as not faithful enough in their conservatism.
Now, as he finds himself locked in an intense struggle for the support of the party's top donors, instances in which he curried favor, or merely associated, with people who do not share his views on some contentious issues are being dredged up and shared by people who believe that Mr. Cruz has been disingenuous, especially in his solicitation of money from people he has coolly dismissed as having "New York values."

But wasn't the Cruz campaign okay with accepting the word of CNN without verification?
Trump does not pretend to be Elmer Gantry. Cruz is a fake and a fraud. I could care less how much money he gives to his church, itâs his cozying up to homosexual âmarriageâ supporters and begging for their money that makes me sick to my stomach. That faggot lover Paul Singer that worked long and hard for queer âmarriageâ Cruz begged money from and he got it. Guess Pastor Rafael was upset when queer lover Singer endorsed another creep that panders to the homosexual millionaires by the name of Marco Rubio.
Trump is pro life. Deal with it.
We have many in my church that I know don’t take off their taxes. They have commented that tithe money is between them and God and if they give to get the deduction, it’s for the wrong reason. I argued with them that if you give anyway, why not get the benefit and they would say they just wanted to keep it out of the reasoning for giving. They would describe feeling dirty taking off their taxes and would rather just leave it out. It’s just the way some people are.
How do they know he gave 1%?
Now, Ted's dad has told Ted since he was a kid that God wanted Ted to rule and bring the wealth of the wicked home to the rightful priests and godly folks. Beck, a good Mormon, a good many Mormons along with him, and a lot of people who couldn't stomach Romney because he was Mormon now band together to push the he's, "a good Christian man" campaign again.
And so it goes, sheep easily led astray.
it is between a person and God so not for anyone to judge if one takes deduction or not. At least you advise but accept their decision. By the same token so many here beat up Trump for charitable contributions. We give as an act of love we believe that is between my family and God. For over 40 we have listed very few of the charitable gifts we have given to individuals on taxes. Organizations we list, but what give to individuals we feel led by God to give.
What Cruz or anyone else gives to God is between them & Him, but I don’t like someone who is double-minded, deceitful, greedy, & underhanded representing Christians- unless he specifically differentiates himself according the the sect he follows. He is a blatant hypocrite.
Too many people are walking away from churches as it is. This is why. (I say this because many of them remain in faith, but being in that kind of company undermines their faith & their interaction with the Lord. I understand it because I have experienced it. It drives a wedge.)
There ARE other charitable deductions people will take - Red Cross, Salvation Army, donations to the arts or sciences (medical research, etc.) I’m sure they got the 1% from his tax returns - but there is no way to say that is the total of his giving, nor that it includes his church giving. This is just an attempted smear by Huckabee because he was angry about evangelicals supporting Cruz, and now it has been picked up by the Trump supporters.
I don't agree with the first part of your statement. Not so sure about the second.
If you look at my tax returns, you will see absolutely no contributions to any church. None, and it's not an accident. It's a deliberate choice.
Depending on the nature of the actual donation, you may or may not see monetary contributions to organizations dedicated to helping people. You won't see the many hours of service I've given to my community. You won't see money given to family members who have been in crisis. You won't see deductions for the clothes I've bought for the kids I taught when I taught in middle school, the money I slipped poor children so they could participate in a field trip, and things like that.
How someone chooses to spend their money is none of anyone else's business. I try (and often fail) not to judge anyone else's heart.
I hear your opinion of which candidate is the best on Christian values. I won't address that.
Just saying— if he used Standard Deductions, he wouldn’t show ANY itemized deductions. I do church books and I do taxes, and your scenario doesn’t fit. Folks itemize as many deductions as they legally can, or they don’t itemize any at all. 1% is an honest percent. If that’s what Cruz gave, that’s what he gave. Does his presidency stand or fall on that?
Not everyone deducts tithes - it kind of goes to the Scriptural discussion about giving or serving to be seen doing so - “they already have their reward”. I’m just saying that going by the tax returns for church giving is not a reliable indicator. For example, I give a lot in cash at church in the offering, and I rarely use the giving envelope that tracks the giving so I would get a statement. So if you looked at my charitable giving on my tax return, it would not be an accurate picture of what I actually gave.
I honestly get that. It is however, UNUSUAL, and not many tithers are that spiritual. I’m glad Cruz is, now I know I should never have doubted that he can be trusted. (ahem)
No, that would be Cruz, Kasich, Bush, or Rubio, who have taken money from homosexual activist millionares. Trump funds his own campaign.
So he’s not trying to get something from these activists but supports their cause; this is OK for you?
