IN 1999, Sydney was at its peak. The Olympic Games were imminent and there was unbridled optimism that Sydney was about to emerge as an international city as the millennium approached.
Internationally, Sydney was renowned as an incredibly fun place to live; the entertainment was world class, with great restaurants and venues to visit at any time of night.
Something pernicious has happened in the 17 years since, and Sydney has not just regressed into a ghost town, but there is an undercurrent of something much more sinister in the way the city is being run.
As I write this in 2016, not a day goes by without the press reporting of yet another bar, club, hotel, restaurant or venue closing.
Walk up Bayswater Rd, Oxford St or the 'Golden Mile' in Kings Cross and club after club is closed; not just after 1.30am, but permanently.
A few months ago the perennial Flinders bar in Darlinghurst closed. Then the century-old Exchange Hotel shut down, which held six venues including the Phoenix, live music hall Spectrum, and the upstairs pool hall Q-Bar. Following that, the evergreen Goldfish bar in Kings Cross. Then Soho.
Every week, another venue or restaurant closes. The soul of the city has been destroyed.
Kings Cross, in particular, has been decimated so badly that it will never, ever, come back as an entertainment precinct. Hugo's Lounge closing, which was the swankiest bar in Sydney for 15 years and voted Australia's best nightclub five years running, was the final nail in the coffin for the area.
The venue also housed the 130-seat Hugo's Pizza, which had not just won Best Pizza Restaurant in Australia at the Australian Restaurant & Catering Awards, but was also named the World's Best Pizza in the American Pizza Challenge in New York.

Seriously man, your numbers just don’t add up. I agree though that the moslem invaders would like to conquer Oz just like everywhere else.
It's been all over all the news channels, not just the internet with a lot of Imans and muslim clerics and just the average muslim on the street and they're all proclaiming - - and I'll paraphrase: While the non muslim population are having children at the rate they are having them now, we muslims have many wives and we're having eight badies per wife.
I was mostly posted to Fleet Base East ships or Fleet Headquarters when I was in the Navy and worked for years at Fleet Headquarters as a civilian. Hence I know the area around the Cross quite well.
The Cross became a hotspot for drug and alcohol fueled violence. It got that bad that the sailors from FBE now travel into the CBD (The Rocks is a favourite spot) for a night out.
To be honest, I’d not shed a tear if someone dropped a nuke on the place (about 10kt would do nicely).
Good grief man, you're changing everything around. I never started large groups are scared. You've simply inserted this deceptive statement here.
Kindly stop being deceptive in so many of your individual replies (as I've had to stop and point two of them out to you).
What is happening in every European city and the UK (where muslims have been swarming in) - groups of muslims are attacking lone individuals or two individuals. i.e., London on New Years Eve. prime example. And countless other examples of groups of muslims attacking and raping all over these countries. And - - in Australia! Not as many attacks as have occured in the U K or German or Sweden, but they are happening in Australia. And just the images on everyones' tv screens, sticks in peoples minds, especially women in every country.
My better half and I wanted to celebrate our 40th anniversary and we wanted to go someplace outside the continental US.
Our decision came down to a place with the least about of muslims and I found out that muslims are not yet infecting Hawaii (except for when the Obama's show up) so we went there.
I do not believe I have been deceptive. But I don't know how to respond to statements you are making that have no link to reality - claims we have ten times as many Muslims as we do. In terms of you saying large groups are scared - I think that's implicit in your statement (I quote): The majority of Australian citizenry now stay in their homes at night -especially women- every night of the week.
You're claiming this is somehow affecting 'a majority of Australian citizenry' but not 'a large group'. That seems semantically, and linguistically inconsistent to say the least.
As for some of your other statements...
btw, "disappear in the population" ...is the keyword of the day
You seem to be talking about 4 million people that you apparently think have disappeared in Australia (because Australia's statistics say we have around 500,000 Muslims in the country and you've claimed 4.5 million (yes, I know you are now acknowledging that might be a miscount - but I'm assuming you are still claiming that the number is very large).
Australia only has 24 million people - 4 million extra would be noticed. They can't disappear. We only have five cities in the entire country with more than a million people - Sydney with about 5 million, Melbourne with about 4.5 million, Brisbane with about 2.5 million, Perth with about 2 million, and Adelaide with about 1.5 million - and only about another ten cities with even 100,000 people. Where could millions of people 'disappear' without being noticed? It's a claim that doesn't make sense.
While the non muslim population are having children at the rate they are having them now, we muslims have many wives and we're having eight badies per wife.
Basic mathematics - about 500,000 Muslims in Australia in 2011 - four years ago. And that number includes children. Let's assume for the sake of argument that there were 200,000 Muslim women capable of bearing children among those 500,000 (which is likely an overestimate). Let's further assume they can become pregnant again almost instantly after giving birth. With nine month gestation, these women haven't had time to give birth to eight babies since 2011 - unless they all had twins or triplets. But even if they had, that's only 1.6 million - not four million. And it isn't happening anyway. It would not surprise me if the birth rate among Muslims living in Australia is somewhat higher than that of other people here, but not to that dramatic extent. It would show up in statistics - and it doesn't.
They're not coming in from overseas either - Australia is one of the most successful countries in the world at securing our borders - it's easier for us than most because of the fact we are surrounded by oceans but it's also solid government policy - we intercept and turn back boats that try to get here. If people do arrive illegally, we send most of them to camps in other countries for processing and they are never allowed into Australia (if they are genuine refugees, we work to settle them in third countries to create a disincentive to come here illegally). We face international condemnation for these policies, especially from the left - but other nations, including those in Europe are now considering emulating some of them.
This idea that Australia is being overrun by Muslims simply does not match reality.
Being retired, I like so many of us freepers, enjoy spending an hour / a few hours at our computers reading. But I do this all day and all evening. I enjoy history and especially European history so this is one reason why I consider myself -at least up to date on events that are happening in Europe, Scandanavia, Greece, Italy, Russia Ukraine and of course, the U K.
Considering this, I'm afraid to say when there will be any recovery of tourism in any of the countries that have been invaded by muslims. Looks like it could be years and years before tourism gets back to some degree of 'normal'.
Almost 1am and gotta ‘hit tha rack’ now my friend. I’ll be back online tomorrow probably around 1PM and we can resume this discussion. Been enjoyable chatting with you.
I recommend Poland, it still feels like Europe there.
Just about to shut down here but I agree. Poland has been very picky on who is allowed in. Especially any of the muslim migrants. So tourism in Poland would probably work out great. Just fly in - - and fly out and make no day trips to any of the surrounding countries, lol.
Czech Republic and Slovakia are nice as well.
I didn’t think of Poland. Shoulda went there but Hawaii was great. I was really thinking of England. Nixed that one in the bud.
Joined Nov 7 2007, posted ONCE four days later about the iPhone, then went silent for 5 years when he posted on April 16 2012 about the Bering Sea island giveaway.
Complete and utter silence again until September 1 2015, posted an article about the Iran deal. Then nothing: no replies to responses, zip.
Suddenly, yesterday he posted a Christie/Islam story, then started responding to threads. Two of them, one on Nasa and a Mars mission, and this one.
Something seems to be twigging my “sleeper troll” senses.
Well, I have to eat some crow. I’ve checked the math from the articles I visited and it looks like I punched in the wrong digits on my little calculator here on my desk while hurrying in those 45 min. To me now, it now looks like you all have approx. 6,100,000 give or take -islamic muslims down there. So, that leaves us with discussing the key reasons why those businesses in Sydney closed ....wait, pardon me, i’ll have to come back - -I see through my window — there is police car in front of my home and the cop is walking up my sidewalk, brb
Well Constable Don W doofus, I'll go through with the hassle of 'fessin up' and give you responses to your queries: (I know it's probably not a good time for you to read them though, as I'm sure that at this hour of the morning, you're probably chewin on corn cobs with your broken green teeth. But you'll make it, I have confidence in you)
Anyway, I got discouraged with polical discussion after the Republicans lost the White House in 2007, so I did other things for those 5 years ( I was in fact -for all of those five years- watching one cable program, day and night 24/7, so this left me with no time for freerepublic anyway. Btw, the name of that hysterical cable saga -was "Constable Don W doofus Rides into Town." [with spare corn cobs safely secured in his saddle bags.]
"...when he posted on April 16 2012 about the Bering Sea island giveaway."
Yes, I did resume posting here in 2012 but I quickly got discouraged after the Republicans lost to the Mullah Obango -yet again. (I was however, in luck -as cable came back with all the reruns of the Constable Don W doofus Rides into Town saga. And btw, I spent that time between April 2007 and Sept 2012 camping out at Bering Sea Island - casually sippin' cold ice tea watching the saga unfold.
Complete and utter silence again until September 1 2015, posted an article about the Iran deal. Then nothing: no replies to responses, zip."
Well, I apologize Constable Don W doofus, I forgot to tell everyone that this past Aug 31st, I went on a 120 day "Round the World Cruise" on the steamship, USS Don doofus out of Miami. The ships wifi had slid overboard that 1st day of cruising, so no fr until arriving back at Port in Miami two mornings ago. [and btw Constable Don W doofus, you had promised me you'd be there and meet me when my ship arrived back in Port. You had said you were going to help by putting my bags on the back of your donkey and get them to the taxi. But it's O K - I Pardon you. I'm sure you where just busy -feverishly 'chewin' corn cobs, so you didn't see my ship arrive.
Suddenly, yesterday he posted a Christie/Islam story, then started responding to threads. Two of them, one on Nasa and a Mars mission, and this one.
Yes, I've been so enthralled by these primaries, that I decided to try a bit of posting. No more time for the Constable Don W doofus , saga now.
Something seems to be twigging my "sleeper troll" senses.
Nah, it's those std's that are 'twiggin at ya' makin' ya paranoid and hysterical, but at least I gave you my deposition Ossifer. Can I go now??
*************
Btw, Constable Don W doofus, I did remember to send in donations for the freepathon during this past August, and another donation for the freepathon ending in Dec, a two months back. And I'm getting ready to happily send my check again for the current freepathon and btw, on my personal checks, my name and address is printed on them, so ask JimRob who you've bothered this morning for no reason -if you'd like to examine them so as to get me off your Constable Don W doofus Warrant list.
naturalman1975, I'll be back to discuss why those businesses closed when I get back from my pulmonary dr visit. I have copd and had it since 2006 and as time goes by, I find that I can not sit and post like I used to as sitting a lot puts pressure on my chest. But we all have our hassles in life and besides, I still have my family and my church and besides, I've got to see if we win in Nov. (if I get booted for responding to the Constable with satire, it's been fun and I'll still send in my freepathon donations)
my deposition in my post #56 and I ask you to please not take me to the lockup, it’s too early in the morning
I’ll be back after lunch so we can continue with our discussion of the sad events down there in Sydney. I have a dr appt in an hour - got to have some X-rays, then we can resume.
Whoa! Jest a tad testy this fine morning I see.
I’ve uncovered a couple of sleepers in the last few weeks, and your posting history was quite close to the typical dormant account that wakes up at election time.
That you are not one I am glad about, we have enough trolls and interlopers as it is.
Have you ever thought about writing angry diatribes for a living? That was really quite entertaining!
