Sanders: We may look into a recount

posted at 8:41 am on February 2, 2016

While Ted Cruz won a five-point victory in what really turned into a three-way race in the GOP's Iowa Caucus, the Democratic Party's side of the caucus turned into a real nailbiter. Hillary Clinton clung to a lead of less than a percentage point by the end of the night, with both she and Bernie Sanders claiming victory at the end. At the moment, CNN's election tracker still shows a 50/50 tie, although Hillary has 24 delegates assigned to Bernie's 21, thanks to the arcane and opaque process by which Democrats operate their caucuses.

Speaking of which, Bernie may want a recount. NBC's Kasie Hunt caught up with the challenger after he deplaned in New Hampshire, and while he's looking forward, he might still want one careful look back too:

How does one recount a caucus? Even on the Republican side that would be difficult, as was discovered in 2012 in the razor-thin outcome between Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney. On the Democratic side, it would be all but impossible, thanks to the multiple-round system employed.

Hillary declared victory way to early. That should set off alarm bells. Bernie should fight this if he’s serious about winning. Sometimes I doubt that.

Check out the coin they used and if the coin flipper was able to pay off all their bills along with the mortgage.

I just don't believe that many "tied" precincts.

And that many people in charge who don't know how to count. The fact that there are so many "tied" precincts make it look like a pre-planned scheme by the campaign.

Just as spreading the Sanders rumor seemed with the 'pubs.

Recount how?

Bernie needs to cool it and play his position if he knows what a healthy lifestyle choice is. Problem is he has lots more natural appeal to typical Democrat voters than youknowwho. In a fair match he could literally almost win just by showing up - but that ain't what he's there for. He's supposed to just be an old, white tackling dummy for the primaries.

I agree with you, and the anger in the PUMA corner over Hussein’s stunts was off the charts. I have no doubt those lessons sunk home, and this time she was determined to be on right side of the ambush.

He has a LOT of traction with young people. Truly surprising. But then, he is their only alternative and they are of the opinion they have already been robbed in perpetuity, and they might as well get some of the division of loot. Rand Paul and Carson are the only Republican candidates who have traction with them, but neither is taken very seriously. They seem to like the crusty Dutch uncle persona.

If there was ever a question that Hillary was a witch the “tied precincts” and the coin tosses proved it.

Then there was the blizzard that sent all the vote counters home.

Bernie—if you don’t know who the sucker is it is you.

I suggest they try a Trial by Combat.

My money would be on the old guy.

There is no crying in baseball, nor recounts of Democrat Iowa caucuses.

I was surprised to learn the DNC controls the Iowa Democrat primary, not an Iowa Democrat organization.

According to what I heard, the Iowa caucuses are run by the respective parties, not the state, so there is no such thing as a mandatory recount in a close vote. Sanders should just move on; the virtual tie was victory enough.
