Yes, I’ve been reading a lot of posts, and the gist has been that Iowa is just downright strange and difficult place to make predictions for elections. I think the reason is that “Iowa” is more of a geographical construct than a cultural entity.
For instance...
Much of NW Iowa was originally settled by Scandinavians, so the area is dotted by Swedish and Norwegian towns. In contrast, much of SW Iowa was originally settled by folks from Missouri and other states. So, Western Iowa may be solidly ‘Republican’ but for different reasons.
Many of the towns of NW Iowa were founded and populated in the 1890s-1910s by foreigners. So many of the older inhabitants (who are the ones at the caucus voting) still identify more as Swedes or Norwegians than ‘Americans.’ They don’t identify with Trump because he talks funny, he’s mean (think ‘Minnesota nice’), and he doesn’t fit their definition of a Christian. Whereas, Cruz might not be a Swede, but he’s “nice” and he seems to be a Christian, so they’ll vote for him.
Remember, many of these caucus-goers in NW Iowa are Scandinavian (Swedes and Norwegians), just like the Swedes and Norwegians today in Europe who are letting Moslem hordes take over their countries. They don’t particularly like guns nor people who speak their mind. They like taxes as long as it’s “for the children.” They love political correctness. And they sure love their Laurence Welk reruns!
This may sound like stereotyping, but I am talking about the caucus goers. I know a lot of the folks who caucus as so-con Republicans have kids or grandkids who live in Des Moines or Minneapolis and are flaming liberals.
In contrast...
Towns in SW Iowa were founded much earlier (1850s-1880s) and by mostly English-speaking Americans. The folks caucusing there identify as Americans, just as their parents and grandparents did. Folks there are ethnically ‘Heinz-57’ and don’t all go to the same church (or any church at all). They like their 2nd Amendment, hunting, low taxes, and good jobs. They live near Omaha so see the large influx of Moslems and Hispanics to the area, even if it’s just when they head to Omaha for their monthly shopping trip. So, Trump’s pro-American message resonates with them.
SW Iowa is like Detroit with just white people— An area that used to be prosperous that has collapsed economically with a falling population. However, the area has a very low crime rate. You can buy a beautiful old craftsman home or brick Victorian mansion there for cheap. It’s not a great place to make a living, but if you are a retiree or commute to work (Omaha is about .5 to 1 hr drive away), or work online, it’s a good option.
I think Cruz won the Iowa election fair, but perhaps Trump is making a big stink to get Rubio out of the headlines— cheap publicity. Also, he may be trying to hint at the fact that he would do the same thing to Hillary if (when?) she tries any monkey business in the general election.

I was extremely disappointed that Howie's live radio broadcast wasn't piped outside and into the venue (Sean Hannity used to do this years ago before his Freedom Concerts in NJ). So we got to watch a very skinny Howie and other unrecognizable people do a silent show. Howie interviewed Ann Coulter... I stood behind them, but couldn't hear a word. :-(
Quick question: Whatever happened to Sandy? Haven't heard her in more than a month. Is it VB, Steve and Grace now? (I don't know what any of them look like, so don't know if I saw them on Tuesday.)
The story on Sandy--and I can't remember if I mentioned it in the Howie thread but maybe I did it only in the Mass. state section of FR--is that she now has her own show on a different station. Just before the new year, it was announced the Sandy Shack show would air weekdays 12-3 pm (starting Jan 4) on WMEX AM 1510, the station that was briefly Howie's flagship. Sandy's last appearance with Howie was on Christmas Eve.
On her first show Sandy did thank Howie, but HC didn't mention her departure at all (no on air thanks etc). Bad blood? Or simply "not mentioning the competition"? Finally, I understand recently someone asked Howie what happened to her and he replied, "She got another job." Thanks for all the sentimentality, Howie. Maybe he wished her well privately. WMEX is on the TuneIn app if you're curious to hear Sandy. So maybe she wanted to do something on her own; she, like Howie, may be friends with McPhee (who is on 3-7 pm on WMEX) and they maybe got talking, etc. WMEX wanted a local "name". Indeed it is Howie, Steve, Grace and VB now.
Thanks for posting the pic of Sandy here. I searched for a picture of her for years, and never found one. It is kind of what I thought she looked like.
I have been missing hearing her every day on Howie's show, but I wish her well on her new venture...
Hubby and I saw him at a book-signing event in West Springfield, MA (and also a few years ago with Col. Hunt in Holyoke, MA). The 2016 Howie looks nothing like those previous Howies! Seriously, he looks like a completely different person since that "sleeve" surgery...
